I have just installed two new drives and installed XP-Home SP2 on Drive 0 (C: Drive). How do I format the 2nd drive it shows in the bios, etc.

And I always use Y and Z for the CD's and or DVD's. How do I change the drive letters.

As you can tell I am not very sharp about XP. Easy on 98SE. Getting too old to learn these new fancy things.

To change the drive letters in XP do the following.

Start/All Progs/Accessories/System Tools and look for COMPUTER MANAGEMENT. Next select STORAGE/DISK MANAGEMENT.

Now select the drive(s) you want and change the drive letter(s)

To format the second drive.
Open up MY COMPUTER and select the drive you want. Right click it and select FORMAT, confirm when asked.

be carefull! I lost 9GB of data and files by formating the wrong partition like this. (I got quite a bit of the important stuff back after a LOT of sweating and praying and countless days rtying out various pieces of software to recover it) I eventually opted for EASY RECOVERY Professional and now keep it installed on the computer.

I didn't know that sweating and praying could recover data from a formatted partition. :D

How is that done?

Is it the same as moving mountains?

I don't use that technique and my PC just keeps working. :)

Under Disk Management it shows Drive 1 (2nd drive) as "Unallocated" and it does not show in MY Computer. I want to format NTFS and get it to show. Cannot find out how to do this. Bios, etc. is all OK.

It does not allow me to format from there - just "Partition". Do I want to partition and if so which? Then will it format?

Select the unallocated space and then rclick and choose new partition or new logical drive and just follow the wizards' prompts, which will include the format type that you would like used.

I supose it wouldn't allow you to format because there was no partition existing.
You cannot format until AFTER a partition has been created.
So you were offered the option to partition. :)
