I have built a system and installed a vid card sound and a modem 1 at a time . when i installed the modem i got a message that there were no IRQ's left but the modem installed anyway and shows in device manager so i switched slots it is noe in slot 5 and it will function (poorly). When i go to sys information i see a irq for the modem enumerator but the actuall modem doesnt show up and if i go to device manager the modem is there but if i look under resorces it has input output range but no interrupt request listed .here is my question will it help to reformat the hard drive and start over ? my old machine will connect at 44000 most of the time the new one with this problem connects at 37000 at best but the biggest difference is the bytes sent and received are terrible i am thankfull for any replys

If you have nothing connected to one of the computer's serial ports, then you can disable it in BIOS and use its IRQ for the modem.

To re-format the Hard Drive is not the answer.
Here is a link to a Modem BBS that may help.

What kind of modem is in your old machine?
Also depending on where you live the condition fo the phone lines plays a major role in how fast you can connect, and internal software modems (which is the kind you have) are much more sensitive to poor line conditions than hardware modems are....
