PLEASE HELP...I HAVE A PROBLEM ONLY SOMETIMES WHEN RESTART NOT ON A FRESH BOOT I GET 3 BEEPS AND A BLACK SCREEN...THEN WHEN I HIT ANY KEY IT CONTINUES THE REBOOT WITH NO PROBLEM?? THIS NEVER HAPPENS ON A FRESH BOOT .
HERE IS WHAT MY SYSTEM CONSISTS OF::

HARD DRIVE= WD 40 GIG...7200RPM
OS= WINDOWS 98SE(CLEAN INSTALL)
BIOS VER.=1004 I THINK 1004B
MOBO= ASUS AV7-266-E
PROCESSOR= AMD 1800+ XP @ 1.533
RAM= 2 256DDR =512
VIDEO CARD= VOODOO 5 5500 AGP
SOUND CARD= SOUND BLASTER XGAMER
INTERNET= EXTERNAL CABLE MODEM\SOHO ETHERNET CARD
MONITOR= IBM 22"
CDRW DRIVE= HP 9110
GAME CONTROLLER= GRAVIS EXTERMINATER GAME PAD
CASE= ANTEC OUTSIDE \WITH 3 CASE FANS AND A CYCLONE BLOWER FAN
POWER= ANTEC 400 WATT

WELL I THINK THATS BOUT IT http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I HAVE BEEN MONITORING MY CPU TEMP AND WHEN I FIRST START COMPUTER ITS AROUND 49C ...AFTER PLAYN SOME MECHWARRIOR 4 (MY FAVORITE GAME)ITS RUNNING BOUT TOPS 58C DONT THINK IT GOES OVER 60C.... IS THAT TOO HOT??..MAYBE I SHOULD CONSIDER A CPU FAN UPGRADE??
WELL OTHERWISE MY SYSTEM RUNS FINE ...SOMETIMES I GET THE OCCASIONAL FREEZE UP WHERE IT DOESNT EVEN LET ME DO CTRL ALT DELETE....NOT ALL THE TIME ...BUT IS IT NORMAL TO DO THAT SOMETIMES...??
SO TO SUM UP MY QUESTIONS :
1= WHY DO I GET THESE BIOS BEEPS?
2= IS MY CPU TOO HOT?
3= ARE THE OCCASIONAL FREEZE UPS MORMAL ?

THANKS IN ADVANCE HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The three beeps is your Mobo BIOS trying to alert you to a problem. Unfortunately, most basic motherboard manuals don't give you the "decoding codes"! However, I found this site that provides information for most BIOS' out their - including what these blessed beeps and boops mean (mosrse code anyone ;-?):
http://www.wimsbios.com/

It's also a neat site for double-checking if you need to upgrade BIOS, too.

About your CPU temps - check Tom's PC Hardware guide online for details - he did an excellent Expose on the AMD Athlons last Fall that sheds l;ight on this hoot issue (pun intended).

I have a 1.33GHz Athlon and most times it's in the 42-45 degC range. I've set 50degC as a warning level in fact...

Hey,

I thought Athlon XPs were supposed to run cooler. 58 degrees seems a wee bit on the hot side to me. I would suggest a new HSF for that puppy. Watcha got on there now?

No, occasional freeze-ups are not normal. That's like saying, "Is my car supposed to stop periodically whilst I'm driving down the Interstate?" hehe

Check your video card drivers. Make sure they are the latest available.

Do you have any red X's or yellow splats in Device Manager for the video or anything else? You may have some IRQ conflicts going on.

Make sure your case fans and blower are circulating the air optimally. Check AMD's website for a schematic on good case airflow.

It could very well be heat related. Do what you have to in order to bring those temps down and see what happens. However, you should still look for conflicts in DM.

Cheers,

Hey ...I dont have anything with any marks in my device manager ....gona check video drivers now actually but think they are up to date ..as far as the heat problem..I have the original heat sink and fan my processor came with ...but today i ordered one from Danatron 5300rpm hope that makes difference..when i got home tonight i took off existing fan and sink and cleaned off the thermal tape that was on there from factory and put some Silicone Compound now it seems to be runnin at 50\52c after runnin games...so seems better already should be even lower with the new heat sink and fan...and so far no crashes ...but we will see
Thanks ill let ya know hot i make out ..

hmm Just a note of thought Amd only recomends thermal tape and not paste compound or pads.

hey Yoda ..
Well you might be right ..cuz you probably know more than me bout this stuff..but I ordered a new heat sink and fan it on its way ..but in the mean time I changed my fans around instead of 2 blowing out in the back of case and 1 blowing in the case from the front ..I switched 2 in front and 1 in back ,then i cleaned off heat sink and reseated with some Silicone Grease and now temps are alot lower ..at a idle its stayn consistently at 50c and after gaming for bit its not passing 53c....so when i get the new sink and fan it should be even better ...thanks for the input ...if ya have any other suggestions Id appriciate it...
peace

ok...Well I just replaced the heat sink and fan on my CPU and now I haven't done much gaming but its at a steady 50c\122f its dropped about 8c hope this is a better temp for it seems more stable just hope it doesnt get higher when it runs longer but I will find out tonight .....
Is 50c a OK temp to be at ???
