Something weird happened to my Operating Systems. A while back I set up a dual –boot system with Windows 98 and Windows XP. Everything went well, for about a week or so when I ran disk defrag. After a ran disk defrag I rebooted my system and it came back saying “Missing Operating System. I couldn’t get back to 99 or XP, so I decided to start from scratch again ie FDISK and Reformat. I loaded Windows 98, then started loading XP. This time it’s not giving me the option to put XP on my drive “D” like it did last time, so I went along loading it anyways and it overwrote Win98. So again I FDISKED and Reformated…….installed Win98 and then tried loading XP again and it’s still NOT giving me the option to install on the “D” drive as it did the first time. Does anyone know what’s going on, and why the first time I did it, it gave me the option to overwrite my “C” drive or install on the “D” drive.

Thanks,

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Whoa! Two operating systems? How did you do that?I did not think that was possible. How does the computer know which OS to boot to?I think others might agree you are opening yourself up to conflicts.
Is your drive D actually a seperate drive(physical)? You could be overlapping OS's and filling up disk space.See how much space is left on D,maybe not enough room?I have heard of a OS staying on the drive(in background)even after FDISK.You think its gone but it's really not.Is this a single partitioned drive,or a seperate(physical)drive?Personally,I would stick w/one O.S.Too confusing for my little brain http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I can’t say for sure what happened to your dual boot the first time you ran defrag except maybe it moved Ntloader or it moved and can’t find all it’s files.

Now that you have win98 installed you should be able to boot off the XP cd
Or run the install from win98.
During the install use the Custom / advanced options
This should give you the prompt to select install location
Allowing you to install onto your D: drive.

One thing will make it easier.
If you run Fdisk and remove the second partition or the d: drive partition and allow XP to use free space.

Jamtheram and Jennifer, here is a link to Microsoft's instructions on how to multi boot Win XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gettingstarted/multiboot.asp) and the link to multi booting made easy (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/russel/september10.asp).
Jamtheram, Multi-booting various operating systems has been around for quite a while but it has become more popular lately because of Windows XP and it's incompatibilities with older hardware and software. I multi-boot Windows ME and Windows XP and I used to boot Mandrake Linux 8.1 and had no problems multi-booting 3 operating systems. When you install Win XP on a system that has Win 9X (95, 98, or ME) already installed Win XP will set up a menu asking which operating system you want to boot, you choose the OS and it boots to that OS.

I think Windows XP and Microsoft use more of my bandwidth than I do!

Thanks for the feedback ! The first time I loaded XP after having Windows98 installed everthing went fine as I said in my first response. I didn't have any partitions assigned for an "D" drive. I think that I must of allowed XP to use free space as Rick mentions. But now it doesn't ask me if I want to use free space......am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Should I use Fdisk to partition my hard drive first as rond36 links mention?
Sorry if I seem so confused......

If I were to use Partition Magic 6.0, would I set-up my new partition as a logical or primary drive?

Again, thanks for the feedback

Either should work...you can have up to 4 primary partitions.
