View Full Version : Floppy disk drive acting strange

I just had a new power pack put in my computer - (only six months old). Tech checked out the computer to see if there was a reason for power pack failure. None noted. Set it up at home and all seemed fine - until I used the "A" drive. It opened fine and seemed to save okay. I place a different disk in and when I opened it - the same files from the first disk showed up. Took second disk to a different computer and it still showed the files from first disk.

I have tried unistalling floppy disk controllers and drives under device manager - clears the drive - but problem repeats when you put a disk in. It just copies whatever it first opened and even with no disk in slot - shows those files as there.

Opened in safe mode (f8) - Wrote to a new disk and same problem occurred. It saved it, but then showed it still active even with the disk out.

Question - could this be a floppy drive going bad?
Something not reconnected right after the power pack installation?
A virus or spyware? I've run the virus checker several times - all clear. Checked and have the latest updates (XP SP2) installed

Any ideas are appreciated - I want to have a bit more knowledge when I go back to see the tech tomorrow.

Thanks.

Did the FD work properly before the new PS was installed?

If so, then make sure all of the FD's cables are securely connected.
If they're ok, then install the FD in the other system.
If the problem follows it, then it may be bad.

If it works ok on the other system, then update your AV program with the latest files, and recheck for viruses.
If none are found, then try these:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

If no luck, then run Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder.

If no good, then run Hijack This, and post back with its results.

Try F5 after you reinsert the floppy.

Thanks - it did turn out to be a bad FD - tech is not sure if FD took out the power pack or power pack took out FD - but a new FD is working fine now. Thanks again.

You're welcome.
Glad to hear the patient is cured.

Yes - good news.

Looks like it may have been a cold solder joint (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=20796) - mjc was usually dead on the money.
