I was given a "Mustek 600 CU" v1.0 scanner [complete with installation CD] and I'm trying to install the software for it within Win98.
At a late stage in the installation procedure an error is reported as follows:
"Install caused an Invalid Page Fault in oleaut32.dll at 015f:65352986".

I tried it first in "msconfig | Diagnostic Startup".
Then I tried a clean boot [see 2 below].
Then I tried Safe Mode [as mentioned in 2 below].
All gave the same error as quoted above.
Most of the files seem to have installed, but I couldn't see any way to use the scanner. When I connected the USB cable, the scanner was detected and it seems the driver was automatically installed [I have the Windows installation files on the D: drive in the location from where Windows was installed and if files are needed they are automatically fetched from there].

Then I tried to install it within DOS using a Win98 startup disk.
A warning reported it should be installed within Win 3.1 or later.

I found these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=286180
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192926/EN-US/

Does anyone have any ideas?

I wonder if it is the scanner driver itself, or the Twain interface that is causing the problem?
Do you have another imaging device connected/installed?

It might be worth trying another driver. There is a driver for this scanner on Driverguide.com.

The problem was reported [in step 1 below] before I got to the the step 5 where the driver was installed.
I followed the printed instructions supplied with the CD which said:

1. Install the software from the CD.
2. Restart the PC.
3. Connect the scanner to the power pack.
4. Connect the scanner to the USB input.
5. Windows detects the presence of the scanner and installs the driver.
[I saw it "building a driver database", but I missed seeing it install a driver, though I assume it installed a Win98 version included in the Win98 installation files. There's a driver v1.0 included on the CD, and I also later downloaded file "c6usb9|10.exe" that installs driver version 1.0a, though neither of these were manually installed]

I have a digital camera that connects to the USB port and works as it should.

I assume that the installation was not fully completed [because the error was reported], although for all I know it could have been completed. There's no sign of any controlling application. The installed instructions for use say that a window [for the "Scan Dialog Box"] should open on screen when the lid of the scanner is lifted, but that doesn't happen. In that case the user is expected to right-click the button on the taskbar and configure it to do so, but there is no button on the taskbar!

Presently running : [32-bit module] "oleaut32.dll" v2.40.4518 :)

It may have been updated when I installed "Script Sentry v2.7.1" [from "ScriptSentry.zip"] on 5th May 2004, with 2 added components, namely:
"Visual Basic 6 Runtimes" installed using "vbrun60-setup.exe"
and
"Windows Scripting Host 5.6" in "scr56en.exe".
