I mean fiber optic cable. I have been told that you need a speciall nic that has an optical sensor but how does the cable connect to the nic? You can't just solder it on, it glass.

Everything you wanted to know about fibre optic cable, but were afraid to ask.

Fibre optic cable, comes in cables with connectors on each end, just like any other cable. To use it with a computer, you need to have a device installed that can use fibre optic cable, and there will be a place to simply plug the fibre optic cable in. I'm not sure what you're wanting to use this cable for.

Some connector types (SC) click onto the NIC, some (ST) twist on.

The SC connectors are attached to the cable using a special crimping tool, but they are much more reliable than their twist-on bretherend (ST). And yes, you will need a special connector on your NIC. Ethernet over Fiber cable 100BaseFX can transmit up to 2000 meters without any repeater, and is immune from EMI (that stuff that makes a wireless (or even copper signal) go haywire. It costs a pretty penny, though.
