Hi all. I've got one of those Bytecc usb 2.0 external enclosures that allow you to place an ide hdd or cd-rw into the bytecc case and it then becomes a portable usb 2.0 storage unit. It works great on two computers, both of which have on-board usb2.0 controllers. I can copy files to and from the "bytecc hdd" just fine. However, on a third system, which does not have an on-board usb2.0 controller, I'm using a belkin usb2.0 add-in card. I can copy files to either of my main system hdds on this third computer from the "bytecc hdd" just fine; files copy almost instantaneously. However, when I try to copy to the bytecc from the either of the hdds on my system, it runs very slowly, even slower than regular 1.1 usb.
All three systems have winXP updated to sp2. All three systems work well. Two are amd systems, one intel, and it is one of the amd systems that I am having trouble. This particular computer runs just fine otherwise, and runs at 2.17 GHz, with 512 of ram.
I have turned off and on the usb controller in the bios, this makes no difference. I have uninstalled the drivers for the enhanced usb controller and reinstalled them, but that makes no difference. I am out of ideas. The hdd in the bytecc enclosure is a 40gig maxtor, 7200rpm, 2mg cache. Thanks for any help. marty
See if a clean boots helps to sort out the problem:

Good suggestion, ski, and I tried it, but no go (but thank you very much for the lead on clean booting XP). I suspect that this may be a bios issue. I've gone into device mgr and found that the IRQs for the various usb components (hub, enhanced controlled, usb controller) are scattered among 3 different irqs, in some instances irqs that are being used by other components, such as my modem and video card. I've tried to make some changes in my bios to alter this, but no go. The device mgr reports no conflicts, but I have to wonder. In contrast, I have another computer that has on-board usb2.0 and in that device mgr, all the usb features and under one irq.
I have tried different usb2.0 drivers, but that made no difference. I've tried different pci slots, no difference. I called Belkin, but they could not explain why the card would work perfectly in one direction, but not the other. This is really weird and very disappointing as I would like to download stuff , like about 15gigs, from the computer onto my portable usb hdd. Sure, I can do it via usb1.1, but the whole point was to have a faster way of moving data around for backup purposes.
I'm going to install the card in my wife's Dell and see what happens. If the same thing occurs, then it more than likely is the pci card. All of our machines have XP SP2 installed, so in terms of OS, there are minimal differences.
Thanks for the input.

I put the belkin card into my wife's dell (a 1.5g P4) and it worked perfectly. Files transfer both ways just fine. And the dell has sp2 installed. So there is something about this otherwise well-functioning amd system (soltek drv5, t-bred revision b running at 2.16GHz, 512 samsung 2700 ddr, fsb at 166) that is causing problems. Are there any registry or services that might be causing this? One thing I will do is copy the dell services settings exactly to the drv5 and see what happens. I've got the services on the drv5 set per blackviper's "safe" settings, which comes down to disabling a number of services or setting some at manual. I'll copy the dell settings (which I think are set at default) and see what happens.
On the one hand, it's encouraging to know that the belkin card works. I mean, it copies 8mg exe files in a blink of an eye. It is fast. Hell, if need be, I'll put the belkin card in her computer to speed it up a bit.
