What I'm currently working on is a basic FAQ/HOW-TO on flashing the BIOS of the PC. As this FAQ develops, it may or may not cover other aspects of the BIOS, such as settings and configuring it in detail. For now, it will be just an FAQ for flashing. What I would like to know for others is what questions they have about this. To comprise the FAQ, I want to stick to format of question/answer responses. I've compiled a list of typical questions that I am currently working on answers to:

How do I flash a BIOS?

Why should I update my system BIOS?

How do I clear the CMOS?

How do I get a replacement BIOS chip?

How do I save my BIOS settings so I can restore them later?

How can I fix my BIOS chip after a bad upgrade?

Why can't I access my BIOS? I press Delete and nothing happens?

How do I tell what version of BIOS is currently installed on the motherboard?

What does CAS Latency 2 and CAS Latency 3 mean?

How do I disable ACPI?

How do I clear the password?

These are a few that I have compiled. If you have any that you would like to contribute to the FAQ please post them here or email them to if you prefer. Any contributions will be noted and if used, the contributor will be listed in the FAQ in a special thanks section for all those who participate.

There is a ton of different site pertaining to what your looking for. You just need to search a little better. Try searching MSN witht the keyword "BIOS". That should find you all the info you need.

Post Code when you say (How do i clear my pass word) exactly which Password?

PC Protect passwords
Text passwords
Bios passwords

If going with Password Protected PC,

Turn off the system and search the motherboard for a Clear CMOS Password jumper. This jumper lets you clear the password without wiping out the entire contents of CMOS RAM. The jumper can be hard to find. Check the motherboard's documentation or manufacturer's Web site for information. Once you find the proper jumper, set it and reboot the system. When you see a BIOS message that says "Password cleared," turn off the PC, reset the jumper, and boot normally.

If there's no jumper, remove the battery, which wipes the CMOS RAM's contents. Some chips hold a latent charge longer than others, so it may be a while before you can return the battery to the PC. (If you put the battery back in too quickly, the CMOS's memory may not have cleared yet.) After you reset the date, time, and hard-drive parameters, use the BIOS Default option to restore general settings.

I don't think postcode is wanting an answer to a problem. As I understand it, he's setting up FAQ page on his site (or something like that).

He wants us to think of any questions we might want answered (about BIOS related things)if we were to go to his FAQ place.

Postcode, I know how to get into the BIOS - it's what to do when I get there, that I would like answers to eg what all the settings mean and which are safe to change and why would one wish to change them anyway. Those are the things that I would like to know.

(I know I could browse this site and others for answers - just making a suggestion for Postcode)
