I want to use the hard drive from a now defunct laptop in my desktop. I bought a conversion kit and everything "seems" simple enough. However I don't know how to tell the pc that I have a second drive as there is no slave designation on the laptop. If I choose cable select with the laptop on the middle conncector, will the pc see the laptop drive?

If you have no jumpers on the drive or the kit then it would appear to be down to trial and error to see whether the drive is recognised in the bios or in windows.

Is the kit attached to the computer like a normal slave drive?

trial and error it is, something I usually like to avoid. The laptop drive converter kit attaches to the pc like any normal hard drive except there are no jumpers; just the cable connector and power connector.

Just wondering if there was any info/documentation with the kit (or on the equivalent website) about how to configure things. I have seen normal ide "racks" that include the jumpers on the tray and others where you jumper the drive itself. Since laptop hdds don't seem to be jumpered as such (well an old one that I pulled from an AST laptop didn't have any jumpers) then configuring as master on channel #1 or #2 would seem more logical than slaving it to the IDE on channel #1. Be interested to know how you get on and then maybe I should try and see what is on this old drive of mine. ;)
