Hi All,

I have been lurking in the wings for a couple of weeks, and I suddenly have a tale to tell.

I have an IBM Aptiva 2163-580 that has not given me any problems at all for 2+ years, and I went to replace the DVD drive with a CD/RW, and when I went to turn on the computer, nothing happened. The power light comes on, but, no beeps, and no hard drive light. Eeek. I replaced the DVD drive, made sure that nothing else was disturbed, and still nothing.

I double-checked all the connections, and everything is where it was before I started. What did I do??

Thanks!

Randy

Sorry, I didn't see the part where you had double checked your connections. It still wouldn't hurt to recheck everything in case something isn't plugged in all the way.

Hello rsrasile,

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

What about the jumpers on the RW? Is it set as Master or Slave and on which IDE?

It's possible since this is an Aptiva that there's some proprietary stuff to contend with...wait for other's to chime in here.

Oops, I see you went back again to the DVD...since both are ATAPI devices and usually use generic CD-ROM drivers you might have some ghost drivers messing with things. I would head into SAFE MODE and DEVICE MANAGER and remove any instances of the DVD drive and CD-RW if there. REBOOT and let Windows find the drive you currently have in there and install the drivers
