Sometimes when I right click on My computer (win98se) and left click on explorer, my computer freezes and I am unable to get out of explorer. I have to Cntl-alt-del to end explorer. My computer usually crashes shortly after that. This is a new install of windows with hardly any other programs loaded. The only programs running in the background are:

qwdlls
InCD
Systray
explorer

I have disabled qwdlls and InCD and I have not had the problem since but I only did this 1 hour ago. Has anybody had similar problems? Or does anybody know if these programs are notorious?

QWDLL = Quicken?s quick launch utility which loads Quicken DLLs at startup so that Quicken can start quicker whenever you invoke it. Just like its Microsoft cousin, Find Fast, this program is a total waste of time and simply takes up resources.

InCD is the program that allows you to use a CD-RW like a large floppy disk...

QWDLLs can be disabled with no adverse conequences, InCD well if you want to use CD-RWs then you'll need it...what version are you running?

I am running InCD ver 3.14. I see that you are aware of the web site "solutions that work" I too have been there and that is why I have disabled the quicken start program. So far I am able to "explore" with out a problem. We will see how it goes today. I need to run InCD sometimes so I hope it is not the problems.

Here is another question for you. Why do I keep losing all the cute little icons that represent a web page in my favorites menu/links tool bar. For example, I have an icon like a U in a blue background for this web page. I used to have all kinds of cool icons. Sooner or later however they seem to be replaced by the booring IE "e". Why does that happen?

Well it happened again. I have nothing running in the background and when I right click "my computer" and explore my files, the screen opens with a flashlight on the right side and the computer freezes. I am taking it in today to see if there is a hardware problem

In answer to your second question...I would like to find a definitive answer to that one too, but the best I have come up with is it is an IE bug....and one that doesn't seem to be very high on MS's lists of things to fix.......

Have you run a virus scan yet?

I'm not quite sure what the latest version of InCD is but you may want to at updating it also........

No virus. This is a virgin install. I have disabled InCD so I don't think it is the problem but BTW I have ver 3.14. Today I replaced the ram stick to no avail. Tomorrow I will try a new mother board.

Latest version of InCD is 3.21

It can be disabled from starting at bootup. (Msconfig \ start\ and de-selet from there) Make a short cut to it and keep it where you can find it easily. then when required just click on it. InCD can cauase probs and freeze your comp if left running all the time. Ricoh recommend dis-ableing auto start for it.

Thanks Ernie,

I was using Linux last night and didn't get around to checking the latest version of InCD, I knew 3.14 didn't sound right as being the latest...

Thanks for the info, I'll check for the upgrade but I have had it disabled for a while now and still have the freeze problem. The funny thing is, I don't have any other problems except when accessing my files through the windows explorer. Very frustrating. You don't realize how much you use the file manager in explorer until you are afraid to go there.

The icons you are talking about--favicons--as it were, sometimes get wiped out when you clean up your hard drive I have been told. Here is a short tut on how to restore them form another forum.

<begin tut>There are utilities out there that automate the process, but personally, I don't like the idea of using a program to do something that I can do so easily 'by hand' in three easy steps. Basically, this is what you do:
1) Obtain an icon (to your taste) for the Favorite. Often, you can simply type the base name of the web site plus "favicon.ico" and press Enter. This will often (but not always) show a 'page' in IE with the graphic of the icon in the upper left corner. If this technique works, all you need to do is right-click the graphic and do a Save as (and save it as an .ICO file). In other instances you can use completely different icons for a web site. You can obtain full collections of beautiful icons from several web sites. I like Scrow's myself (see Iphile).

2) Once you have an icon, launch IE and click your Favorites menu. Right-click directly on a Favorite and select Properties. Click the Change icon... button and Browse... to the icon you set aside for that site. I have all mine in one easy-to-find location.

3) Enjoy!

The icons get lost when you delete Temporary Internet Files manually. Usually if you use the option to delete them im Tolls\Internet Options they stay put.

If you want to keep them you can browse to the Temporary Internet Files folder in Windows Explorer, they will be listed there, and the icons will be beside the filenames. Right click each one, copy & paste it to a folder. Then you can copy & paste them back to their original location any time, or use the procedure above to point them to the secondary folder, which won't be emptied with the rest of the Temp Internet files.

The catch is you have to do this before they disappear...or get them back the hard way...
