View Full Version : Computer will not BOOT!

A word doc was started and failed to load all of the way. I did alt_ctrl+del to end task and document would not respond. I reset the computer and this is how far it got.

The monitor displayed "no video signal" and the hard drive light came on right away and stayed solid.
Drive: I check it on another system. It booted and operated.
Video: I put another video card in and still got the problem.

Any ideas?

I wrote something before that was only good when the system was started but since you can't see anything on your monitor then your in a bit of bother.

I can't think of anything else other than to check all the cabling, as you might not have reinstalled the devices properly when you took the components out of the other computer and put them back into your original computer.

This is very strange i must say - never heard of this sort of problem before.

crasher,

I would attempt to boot into SAFE MODE. Would you post back if you are able to get up and running?

Whyzman:
I would if I could. I cannot get to the point to hit F5. When I push the power button the green power light comes on solid and the red drive activity comes on solid. The drive light does not flicker but is solid. After a few seconds of a blank screen (no memory test)A MSG appears "please check video connection" in a large red box. And that is where it stays. This whole time the red drive activity light is solid on.

Maybe I will try and hit F5 quickly before the video MSG displays. Do you think this will switch it to safe mode?
I fear something is seriously amiss, and requires someone above I.

Crasher,

Try continuously tapping the F5 key as soon as you begin to see information processing on the screen.

Usually I will see that particular message when I turn my monitor on without having cranked up my computer...thus, no video signal.

I'll do a bit more research...hopefully some of the others might jump in here in the meantime.

All I can think of at the moment is try another monitor and check the connection on the current one.

On second thought, just to eliminate the possibility, check the memory on another machine or try different memory. I don't think it's memory, it sounds more like a video or monitor issue. If you've already double checked the video card that leaves monitor. Check the memory anyway, stranger things have been known to happen.

yeah, but how did:

A word doc was started and failed to load all of the way. I did alt_ctrl+del to end task and document would not respond. I reset the computer and this is how far it got.

result in:

Replace (CPU 1GHZ Duron) - partial solution. Machine booted up than hung after bott complete.
Replaced - mainboard, fixed all.

that's my question.

If this happened after a lockup/reboot that would lead me to think it was a power supply issue with the mainboard-it's possible that he shorted the board when he did a hard shutdown/reboot.

I've seen something similar happen once; normally a warm-boot { reboot } is the preferred way to restart your system if it locks up, but-i worked on a pc once that had a dubious quality motherboard { Compaq http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif } and after a reboot it literally let the smoke out!

I heard a POP! and saw smoke when i removed the cover; one of the capacitors had blown.

Replacing the motherboard may have saved him now, but i would suggest taking a look at a new power supply just in case.

My recently built system (Athlon 800mhz,264mb,AI61 mobd) crash.
It will not go pass the post.
After recognizing Memory, the Hard Drive & CD-Rom drive.
All I get is a blinking cursor.
Any advise out there!

Hello RasBoriqua

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!

When you "piggyback" on another's post it's difficult for you to get the attention your problem duly deserves. Would you select one of the Forum Topics that you think best fits your problem, post there along with some system information...such as what operating system you are using, type of Motherboard...make of Computer (Dell, Compaq, etc.)
