I was having difficulty installing an SMC1660 network card so in desperation I went out and bought a NetGear FA311 network card. I am still having the same problem. What happens is that the computer recognizes the card, then prompts me for the driver. I start installing the driver and it prompts me to insert my Windows 98 CD. I put that in and it can't find a ton of .dll files, no matter where I tell the computer to search. The files it can't find are the following:

dhcpcsvc.dll
icmp.dll
inetmib1.dll
ipcfgdll.dll
iphlpapi.dll
msafd.dll
mswsock.dll
mswsosp.dll
networks
protocol
Qosname.dll
rapilib.dll
mr20.dll
routetab.dll
rpcltc3.dll
rpclts3.dll
rsvpsp.dll
secur32.dll
services
snmpapi.dll
svrapi.dll
vdhcp.386
vip.386
vnbt.386
vtcp.386
vtdo.386

There are more, but youy get the gist. Can anyone tell me what is going on here and how I can get this card installed and what the problem might be?

Thanks for your help. My computer is an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz, ABIT KT7A, 256 Crucial Memory, using WIndows 98 platform (older version of Windows 98 if that makes a difference).

During the install it asks for the win98 disk.
When it reports it can’t find the drivers/files
You need to reinsert the disk for the NIC and point to that cards win9x path to search for the required files.

Windows forgot to tell you insert the disk provided by the manufacturer .

If you can find an easy solution to this let me know. I have the same supposed EASY network set-up card and it usually takes me about 2hrs to get it installed. It makes no difference which version of Windows you have.

me thinks you're not pointing the install to the win98 cd.

highlight and type it in maually or browse to the correct folder.

by coinsidence I just got done succesfully installing an fa311 netgear into a pentium machine- this was before I saw the following this (http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/network/reviewhtml/Netgear_FA311.html)

I personally had little trouble with the drivers I downloaded, just unzipped/exctracted to desktop and pointed the install there!

additionally I found this:

From Netgear Tech support, there are
FA311 programmed wrong in their PCI board.
The workaround is to execute dia.exe from
the floppy disk so It will recognize as FA312.
