I tried to install the dvdrom driver/software, and when it asked me if i wanted to apply dma mode I misunderstood what it said, and I made the wrong choice...it applied dma mode and it does not accept dma mode settings and now I have no cd rom drives, and my secondary bus master ide controller {dual fifo} is now flagged with a yellow and black exclamation mark...I can point to the driver for it, and it will work, but when I reboot, it all comes back as not working. I need to know, how to change the dma mode back to the original dma mode configuration, without reformatting or reinstalling windows if possible?
I have windows 98 2nd editon which is a complete reformat from windows me
os. I am blond, so please give me simple terms, any help is greatly appreciated.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Right Click MY computer
Scroll down to properties and left click it.
Click the Device manager tab
Double Click on the cd-rom icons .
Then Right click on the dvd drive Icon.
Then Click on Properties
Then the settings tab
Look for and remove the check mark next to DMA
If this isn’t the problem.
It may be caused by the drivers you installed for the ide controller.
If they have an uninstall .
Use that Then reinstall with dma disabled

Ok...i went to where u said, and the dma was not checked. I have no way to uninstall the drivers either... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Under the cd rom it use to list both DVD ROM 10x with driver microsoft consumer windows publisher as J:/ and then Sony CD-RW CRX140E with the same driver. Now it shows only one, and it is listed as DVDROM 10X with a red x over it. I am lost, I do not know what to do... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Can I remove either the cd rom or the via bus master pci ide controller to get the original settings back??? Thank you for helping... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
If you have a VIA chipset then you can in fact remove the drivers.
Run the Via4in1 driver install program again.
The first screen will ask install answer yes
Then it should display
At each prompt for the drivers select uninstall.
Or it will ask / say that it should remove old drivers. Tell it to do so
You should also be able to remove the drives in safe mode after you uninstall the via drivers.
Then reboot and install as needed.
