i have a sony vaio fxa36 with a amd athlon xp... every time i check the speed of my processor i get a different number. It is supposed to be 1 ghz. I have gotten 599mhz, 600mhz 999mhz, and 499mhz.. can anybody help me out.? thanks-

Must have a BIOS problem.
BTW. AMD doesn't make an XP 1ghz.
1ghz Athlon... yes.
1ghz Duron... yes.

This is a laptop right? You're probably seeing the effects of AMD's PowerNow technology (similar to SpeedStep) which throttles back the CPU speed depending on system demand to save battery power...
Read the instruction manual...
