Hi,

I have just built a new pc and have put in the hdd, memory,etc and booted up fine for about 30 seconds. After this the machine just shut down by itself on the setup screen.
Whenever I try to power up now the hdd light flashes on and then off very quickly.
It happened when you enter setup to go into the bios.I have the following in the machine:

A PC 266 systemboard ( i think)
Maxtor 60gb hdd
256 mb ram
fdd
modem
atx 300w power supply


any help would be really appreciated.

What details do you need and I will try and supply them

Make and model of the motherboard, CPU, cooling set up...that should be enough for now.

I'm going to take a shot at this one.

PChips Mboard.
KT266 Chipset and that shakes hands w/AMD processors.

System booted for about 30 seconds and shut itself down. Very
carefully make sure your processor was installed correctly.

What was the fan on the heatsink doing during this time?

You are not going to like what I am thinking. And I do hope
that I'm wrong.

The motherboard is a M810LR.

I have installed the processor correctly but have found out that I should havd had and used some thermal paste. This was not given to me.
I have checked for scorch marcks on the heatsink and the processor itself but cannot see anything.
Any more ideas??
