Recently upgraded to a new MIS MB, P4, 512 mb Ram, using two drives, one SCSI (both drives about 4 yrs old). A new problem has arisen and I am dumfounded. Computer is networked to two others at home. Never been a problem. In the past two days, when I try to access Network Neighborhood, the little flashlight searches, cannot find a computer, and the System Resource Monitor shows Kernel Processor Usage at 100%, computer doesn't lock totally, but won't shut down with a reset button from the "shutting down" splash screen. It is the ONLY process where this happens. I have done everything I know to do. Does anyone have ANY idea?? Thanks in advance so very much.

Ok, so you don't get anything from Network Neighborhood, can you check the network settings or does that cause the hang also?

When you do click on it, if you let it sit there for a while does eventually time-out or just stay searching forever?

If you look at the lights on the network card, are they showing any activity while this search is going on?

After the motherboard upgrade did you do a fresh install of your OS?

Hi GCG,
Yes, I did a fresh install using Win98 1st ed. When i click on Network Neighborhood, the "flashlight" searches forever. It doesn't time out, it just goes....and goes....

The network card and hub lights are functioning, because I can see this computer from the others. The network settings haven't changed at all, but I have checked them and they are still as they were.

After I close NN, the cpu stays at 100%. There is next to nothing running in systray, just Norton Antivirus, ZoneAlarm, and Volume Control. I have defraged frequently, clean Temp and Temp/Internet files, etc.

Do any of these things give you a clue?

Thanks again so much! I've learned so much for a long time, just reading here, and never before ran into such a stumbling block!

Have you added the network in Zone Alarm?

If not it may not be allowing communication between this computer and the rest ot the network, one quick check is to disable ZA and then try...if it works the go in and manually add the other machines in ZoneAlarm, the settings you need would be under the Security tab -> Advanced....

Okay, great thing to check.

I just did that. I shut down ZoneAlarm. No difference. What's really peculiar is this: It's actually my husband's computer, mine has no problem). He just came home, tried it while I was out of the room, and Network Neighborhood located the other two compuers, no problem. I came back into the room and he commented that I fixed his computer! I told him I had tried many things, but nothing, so far, worked. So I tried NN, and NOPE......back to CPU 100%, searching with the flashlight, continued searching......until I shut down......back to reset button at splash screen. Then it comes back up fine!! I so much appreciate your help though. Any more ideas??!!

It sounds like it might be the nic, cable, or port on your hub.
Can you swap these with other computer's parts to narrow the problem down a bit?

If you truely believe strongly enough, you are in for a big surprise.
