Upon booting I suddenly experienced video deterioration and found my Intel(R) graphics controller "cannot start" and 'no' monitor device shown in Device Mgr. - Within 'Display Properties' I found a generic graphics adapter (VgaSave) and 'Default Monitor.' Various troubleshooting procedures, updating drivers, reinstallation attempts, etc had no effect (rebooted each time.)

When writing my original intended post (see below my ‘signature,’ this has more details) I realized I had not tried Safe Mode diagnostics. Finding no further help there I rebooted normally and, lo and behold, my original video adapter and monitor configuration settings had returned as suddenly as they disappeared three days previously.

Having motherboard concerns I contacted Intel(R) Tech Spt who believes the issue is probably with the OS not properly installing drivers, rather than being a hardware issue, while acknowledging there is no means to be positive at this point.

Any knowledgeable input will be greatly appreciated, especially as to likely causes, preventative measures and whether I should be concerned about hardware.

Mac (See details of originally intended post 1/13/05 below)

I suddenly encountered video quality symptoms 1/10 after booting, then found the graphics controller in Device Mgr to be 'yellow-flagged' with Properties saying it cannot start (Code 10.) Within DisplayProperties>Settings>Advanced I found a generic adapter present (VgaSave, Device Type: Non Plug and Play Drivers) -- also found here that my monitor info is gone, replaced with 'Default Monitor' (the Properties button is ‘grayed out.’) I then noticed ‘no' monitor device is shown in Device Mgr nor within Control Panel or the summary of hardware in Start>Help. The system and monitor work fine with exception of video quality (1024x768 resolution, with 8 bit color being its only selection.)

I 'believe' the suddenly changed monitor status is due to the graphics controller problem -- but could this possibly be visa versa, or even a problem with WinXP, I’m wondering?? The ‘Add Hardware’ wizard within Control Panel does not allow reinstalling my actual monitor (device list does not include ‘monitor’) even though none is shown in the wizard’s list of installed devices. Attempts to update the driver for the graphics controller or uninstall-reinstall this device results in no change to the ‘cannot start’ status. I updated to the latest graphics controller 6/04 and have tried re-installing the driver both from Windows/system and from the original download files. The monitor has no installation CD, only a floppy to insert for installing data and driver. I upgraded to latest BIOS last year.

My system was personally built 6/03 and has been trouble-free with exceptions of a bad Kingston memory module soon after startup, and a bad WD HDD about a year later. It has an Intel P4/2.4BGHz processor and Intel D845GEBV2L mainboard with integrated video, audio and LAN (no supplementary cards), 512MB memory, 19” KDS monitor, 2 hard drives, CDRW and DVD drives, Antec power supply 350W and UPS. I’m using WinXP Home Ed OS, also Spybot and NIS with AV 2004 all reporting a clean system.
