I have a P II 233 mhz processor with 128 megs of ram. I run Win 98 as Operating system...The problem is that my PC just hangs.I will be working with some application and the suddenly the screen freezes...the mouse doesn't respond nor does the keyboard. In the end I have to reboot my machine. I Formatted the C:/ and then reinstalled windows 98 but still the problem persists...can someone help me....this is driving me crazy.

Freezes, lock-ups, reboots, etc can be caused by (not a complete list or in any particular order) bad memory, heat, bad/dying power suplly, video drivers, sound card drivers, other drivers....

When this happens do you get an error codes?

Has this just happened recently and did you install anything right before it started?

No I don't get any error messages....and moreover I reinstalled every *EDITED* software and all the drivers all over again...Is it due to loose connection of and chipset or cards...It especially gives me an error while using 3d softwares....Earlier it never gave me any problems when I used swift 3d and 3d studio max. I have a SIS6326 8 MB AGP card. It also freezes when I try to convert MP3's using MusicMatch.

The problem is It was working fine 10 days ago...but now it is like hell

thanks

1. Profanity won't work around here.

2. Check my site, linked below, and look in the list of Microsoft Knowledge Database articles. A couple deal with illegal operation errors, general protection faults etc, and one has instructions for a clean boot, oir selective boot.

Go through the procedures outlined and see if the selective boot will isolate a driver or program that's causing this problem. As mjc said to above, this can be caused by a number of problems, the most likely are heat, weak power suppply, drivers or a program not playing nice with memory.

I have a Matrox video card I can't use with win98 for this exact reason, it locks the machine up every time. 4 different computers, 3 CPUs, 3 or 4 powr supplies, different memory tried, same resuklts every time. Pull the Matrox and swap to a different video card, the lockups stop. In other cases it could be bad memory, drivers, heat, program trying to grab memory already in use...it's very difficult to pin down sometimes.

My problem referred to above was complicated even more by a program causing Illegal Operation Errors and Invalid Page Faults, in addition to what I later discovered was bad memory causing BSODs...that was the reason it took several computers to figure out this particular video card was causing trouble...once I got it into one with no other problems, I sorted it out pretty quick...

If it mostly happens when using 3D programs or music applications then you can also throw a problem with DirectX into the mix...
