I am not very good at using a computer, basically got it for the e-mail and family games. I was told to defragment my computer, which I did and also unistalled aol. Since I have done that when I open up my homepage I can't click on anything for 1-2 minutes. Once I can click on something everything goes fine until I open another window or go to another site. I can open up my mail just fine while waiting to click on something. It's just been the last 2 weeks that it's been doing this. I have had several people offer advice and followed all including cleaning up my start up menu. If anyone can give me advice on what to do I would appreciate it, I have windows 98 with 63 MB of ram. I have a friend with the same computer , windows and server that I do and she's not having the problem. I have scanned for virus's also...Thank You

If that fails...check out this (http://www.helpfromtechs.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000167&p=) thread of similarity with the exception of the hold off before the reboot with an added registry muck....careful there http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I suspect DUN (Dial-Up Networking) is the culprit. You will most likely benefit from following the instructions on how to uninstall and reinstall DUN. Are you using a regular (lol) ISP now? Are you using Internet Explorer? In IE Tools/Internet Options under the General Tab you can clean out the Temporary Internet Files folder...this will help somewhat...you can even adjust the amount of storage you want to allow for web pages...some say 10-15MB is adequate.

ok first of all thank you for the advice. I have tried all of what was recommended. I went to unistall the aol adapters and there wasn't any in there. I then uninstalled DUN and then reinstalled it. I cleaned out my temorary files. I also went and ran the repair on my internet explorer. I have no clue as to what is going on. I have contacted my internet provider and they say it's nothing on their end. It took my 5 minutes to get here and then another 10 to do everything else. IF you have any more suggestions short of throwing this computer out the window i would greatly appreciate the help....Thank you

Usually when you have problems like this means you have bad pointers in the registry. Windows 98 has a built in registry repair and it's worth a try.

Start>Restart in MS DOS Mode> at the C prompt type scanreg /fix

Good Luck. You might need to reinstall Windows but hold off on that and throwing it out the Window for now.

Hi tigerrose Just to help complete the picture. Which version of IE do you have and which modem are you using. Also how full is your hard drive?

If you go tot the following link (MS Knowledge base) you will find info about DUN (Dial up Networking) and also a link to download an update. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ln=EN-US&pr=kbinfo&

Sorry, if that does not take you directly into page the question to search for is Q297818

ok as confusing as everything was to me i got it all done and still nothing helped. I contacted my ISP and was told that it could be my network card??? Earlier they told me to get my windows updated to the new one??? So I guess I will try the network card and then reinstall my windows. I need to take a computer class or something cuz i cannot believe all there is to know about a computer. I will check back to see if anyone else has any ideas or can educate me in any way on helping myself with this problem. Thank you for taking the time to help out! All I can say is thank you cuz believe me you don't want my advice on a computer...lol

Of course they would tell you to upgrade your windows (but not for free!)
Are you actually using a network?
Which version of IE (look under Help then About Internet Explorer) are you using?
What modem (Control Panel<>Modems might be enough info) are you using?
How full is your Hard Drive (R-Click on C: and choose properties)?
[/list=a]

Others may suggest other information that could help troubleshoot your problem.

It would be best if we could find out the problem before reinstalling or reformatting. It seems most likely that AOL has messed things up (which it is prone to do) and your registry is corrupted - but there could be other reasons. If you decide to do a clean install, and havent done this before, post back to check on how to go about this and also backup any important data.

How do you connect to the internet? Modem?? DSL?? Cable??
As was asked above, how much free space do you have on drive C?
There is no reason to throw this out the window.

Tell us everything about the computer and someone or lots of someones will guide you in your quest for hassle free computing.

If you have to re-install windows, try installing in place. This will in effect re-create your registry without wiping out your hard drive.

Well it seems like I have finally got the problem fixed..after being onthe phone with my ISP for 2 hours total. After doing the hundred (i'm exaggerating) things that they had me do I finally had to downgrade my internet explorer. Something with the 6.0 version wasn't right so I had to go back to my 5.0. Thanks to all who tried to help....

tigerrose. Glad you got sorted and thanks for posting back. I was afraid it could have been IE6 (which has been causing all sorts of problems all over the place). Sorry you had to spend 2hrs on the phone. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I use IE6 and have had no problems at all. Can I expect to have some problems in the future? Should I junk IE6 and go back to IE5.5 with patches? Thanks.

Hehehe Flick. If the motor's running well why tinker with it. If it starts to stutter in the future you will know one thing to try.

BTW the problems seem most commonly to arise after upgrading to IE6 and can then often be related to what other software you have on your pc.
