Welcome DAMECLES
IF you have onboard video then that takes usually 32MB. SO that could account for the memory not showing up. Also it could be a 64mb video card, but ive yet to see one onboard Is there?

PC HAS 32MB PCI Geforce2 mmx400 vid card. the mobo. is a Gig-byte ga-7dxr,761 chipset;amd Ath1.4ghz; mobo. suports 3gig of ddr ram-currently running 768mb pc2100 266mhz cas2 ddr ram. someone has said that a setting ,to do with "v-cache" would help, but did not give- how-2 do it.i assume (i know!) that if '98se only sees 512mb then 256mb is not being acessed? gee! i wish i had started my computer hobby 10 yeears ago instead of 1 year. thanx!to all. ! Great, forum site here! DAMECLES

Windows 98 has a lot of problem with more than 512mb of ram...
This isn't exactly the problem you have, but look here:
