I have a Sony VAIO PCG-F340 Laptop computer running Win 98 SE that just started a power off problem. When I run the laptop in the safe mode it runs for hours. I have reformated my hard drive and reinstalled Win 98 SE, but the problem still exist. The computer is running on AC power because the batter will not hold a charge. First thing to check is the power manaement settings....make sure that they are (for now set to never), it may be that since you have a battery that is not holding a charge it may be trying to "conserve power" and shutting down (try running it without the battery installed, but with the AC connected) instead of recognising that you are running on AC.

I have all the power management settings in the Bios set to never or no. My laptop has been running for 4 hours now on AC power in the Safe Mode, but when I restart my computer in the normal mode it shuts off. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Not in BIOS...in Windows itself all power management should be off (for now at least). Safe mode disables all but the basic functionality of Windows, including most Power Management settings.

I tried to install the Sony Recovey Cd, setting the CD to boot first, and the computer shutdown just as the recovery screen was loading. I reset the boot sequence back to floppy first then cd and now the computer looses power on boot-up.

I have re-installed the sony recovery disk ok, but I can only operate in the safe mode. I tried to disable the Power Management in WIN 98, but I could not find any area that would allow me to disable this system.
