I have a Hewlett Packard 4535 and am running Windows 98, 196 meg, 6 gb harddrive, 400 mhz celeron processor. I have been having problems since Thursday. Everything has slowed down. If I click on the start button, it takes 10-30 seconds to popup. All programs take this long to open and close. The internet works but also is slow to respond to commands. I noticed that the hard drive light is blinking and hourglass keeps popping up intermittently as if something is running. I have tried Norton Antivirus, Norton winrepair, scandisk, disk defrag, closing all programs except systray and explorer, removing programs to make HD space. Nothing has worked. Thanks,
Ben

Sounds like Yoda and I are on the same page with the question: Do you routinely dump your Temporary Internet Files?

use your disk clean up utility,The disk cleanup utility can be found under Accessories and System Tools in your program listings.Clean up what you can. The last thing to do is a scan of the registry that tells windows what's on your computer and how it should operate. Unfortunately, this is something a novice may want to stay away from, because one wrong move could really screw things up.
Or you could use a third party utility such as Norton System Works 2002 to see if anything in the registry is slowing you down. But this again is another thing the novice should shy away from Unless you feel comfortable in the registry.Could be you Hard drive is getting full or worn out have you had any other problems latley?? Another thing I missed is the blinking light How old is this machine? I would back-up what i want to keep just in case I'm leaning towards the drive going south on ya.

Also, you could check your System Resources...I think Win98 has it. Start>Programs>Accessories>SystemTools>SystemInfor mation.
Check to see once you are loaded how much Available Physical Memory you are showing.
