View Full Version : Motherboard/Memory question

I have two questions for the big dogs tonight:

1. When installing a motherboard into a case, does the motherboard have to be insulated from the case? That is, do I need to have some little insulating washers of some kind on the top and bottom of the motherboard in order to make sure it is completely insulated? It seems that the metal stand-off's don't have any insulation at all.

2. Pertaining to Dual Channel Memory Technology: My motherboard manual indicates that two identical sticks of memory need to be installed in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 in order for the dual channel memory to be activated. I purchased what I thought were two identical Kingston 512mb memory sticks but as I look closer one is a KVR333X64C25/512 made in South Korea and the other is a KVR333/512 made in the USA. Both are PC2700 CL2.5. Are these identical enough? If they are not, is there potential to hurt my motherboard.

I would be grateful for any advice!

Yes you do need to put washers underneath the board to insulate it from the metal of the case. But you certainly don't need to put it on top of the board.
As for dual-channel, just try it with those 2 sticks. If they work, great :p, if not then there won't be any harm to your board. :)

1) - I've never used insulating washers when installing a mobo. The metal around the hole in the mobo isn't attatched to any electrical part of the mobo, so it's perfectly fine the way it is. Go ahead and "protect" it if you want, but know this: the mobo will be electrically connected to the case anyway! The ground for the PSU & mobo is routed throughout the PSU's casing and so is also connected to the case. Given that info, I never bother with insulating washers.

2) - I agree with Deagle, the only way to find out is to try them. And the only way for the RAM to damage the mobo is by shorting out and causing a fire or something. Poor performance hasn't done any harm to PC components yet! ;)

When mounting the motherboad last night I found that 5 out of the 6 stand-offs had little "hooks" on them that held the motherboard in place without screws. The insulating washers I put on them would do no good since the hooks contacted the motherboard anyway.

Thanks for the advice!! You guys are great!!!
