Hi, I am having a problem with my system booting up with a modem installed.
My system has a PC Partner Pent III board with a PIII 500 cpu, 128 mb ram,
8 mb intel i740 video, all those drivers including mainboard drivers are installed. The system will boot up fine if there is no modem installed but as soon as I install a modem it wont boot at all. No beeps or anything.
It did work at one time when I changed the IRQ setting in BIOS to 4 instead of the default 3, for the modem. Now that doesn't even work.
Have tried 2 mainboards ,both are brand new. Tried numerous modems, all brand new. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is the BIOS setting for the COM port. Disable COM2 in BIOS and see if it helps. COM1 should be 3F8/IRQ4, COM2 should usually be disabled.

Also, does the motherboard have an "onboard" modem. If so, you must disable the onboard to get a PCI modem to work.
