Hi ,

My prob is tryiong to get mates pc up & running . The pc was ok when he got it but them being new to pc's forced the ps2 keyboard into the socket breaking the pins inside it , now that option is gone . Tried putting in a usb keyboard but when asked to insert win 98 the cdrom is also now out of action , it does not show up in device manager the front light comes on but thats all. On boot up with win98 start up disc it says loading Oakwell cd rom ect then says no drive found, could parts of the m/b be damaged with the breaking of the pins on kb/ controller.

Any help appreciated

1. Are all the drives set to "Type = Auto" [Dynamically Auto-Detect and configure the drives at startup] in the BIOS Setup?
Is the drive being detected and the drive parameters configured correctly by the BIOS.
On my PC this detection and configuration of the drives is displayed on-screen [because the BIOS is configured to display the info] at each startup.

2. Are resources being correctly allocated to the CD-drive [and all the other items] at startup?
To make certain you could "Force Update the ESCD".
To do this you need to set:
"Reset Configuration Data = Enabled" [or some similar wording].
[In my BIOS this is in the "PnP/PCI Configuration" section.]
Then "Save & Exit Setup".
What this does is to make the BIOS redetect all the hardware on the PCI bus that need resources allocated. Then it makes non-conflicting resource allocations, saves them in the ESCD table, and these are used from then on at each startup.
Each time one or more PCI hardware items is added or removed the ESCD must be "Force Updated" to cater for all the items of PCI hardware in the new arrangement.

Is the CD-ROM connected to the secondary IDE controller, and if so is that controller enabled in the BIOS?

Is it possible to repair or replace the PS2 keyboard socket?

If it's anything like the one I just examined it's not likely. :(

No chance of extracting the pins?
