My thoughts (for what they're worth). Power supply and/or CPU fan. It could very well be heat related. Ron

It could possible be a break in the lead. Check your lead (if you can) with a meter, or by plugging it into something you know that works - e.g. a kettle. A break in the lead would give you an intermittent supply and thus keep it restarting...

If not try it could always be, dare I say it, a VIRUS!!!

Shutting down by itself is almost always heat or power supply. Open the case and clean out the dust bunnies, make sure the cbales are out of the way of airflow as much as possible without folding or breaking them. Make sure the CPU fan is running when power is turned on. Run it for a while with the case open and a small fan blowing onside. If it stops shutting down by itself, it's most likely heat related. If it continues, power supply is a good possiblilty.

Some system info might help, sometimes newer video cards can build up heat and that could cause random shut downs, other things are possible, but heat and power supply are most likely.

I had the same problem and also thought it was heat and power supply related. I went ahead and replaced the power supply but the computer would still restart. I made sure that all my fans were working and that the CPU was getting enough cooling. Still, no luck.

It ended up being a bad motherboard. I replaced it and everything's cool now. What type of mobo do you have ? Mine was a MSI (I think that's what it was) for an Athlon K-7 processor. I switched to a Tyan and no more restarts.

Hope this helps.

gilj40,

Unless the MB is under warranty, looking at less dire alternatives first would be a wise first choice. Replacing a sputtering engine without troubleshooting possible corroded battery terminals could get a bit spendy! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I'd go with Pete's suggestion regarding heat first. There's a possibility since it is rebooting that RAM could be an issue. If you've a spare stick you might try substituting. If you're using a couple sticks right now, you might want to go to one, and swap them around eliminating the possibility of each.

If someone has a PSU you could swap out before purchasing that would be a definite first recourse. You didn't say how many Watts your PSU is now, and what all you've got connected?

Does it restart while doing basic browsing or typical Windows task or is it only restarting while playing game/games?

Sounds like a classic HEAT problem to me......check your cpu fan at the earliest opportunity. It needs to be spinning at 4500+ RPM's to get the job done on most cpu's.
