hello again,
i want to thank MJC for his input and expertise in troubleshooting. i finally got my sndcrd and modem to work but there is still a problem. once i get to the windows page and my desktop finishes loading the computer will freeze. i'f i can get signed on to the internet quick enough, like right now, then it continues to work. i booted up in safe mode and went to device manager and they gave me a problem profile : UNABLE TO INDENTIFY REAL-MODE DRIVER OR MEMORY RESIDENT PROGRAM LOADED IN CONFIG.SYS OR AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE. the fix would be to uninstall this driver and get and update for it. i don't know where to find this driver, and i'm not shure i'f this is causing the comp. to freeze. i am so close to getting this thing working so any help i can get i do appreciate. thank you again all.

Ok the easiest thing here is going to be to list out the autoexec and config.sys files...you can open them up in Notepad and copy the contents to here...

do you know what could possibly be causing the system to freeze after it gets to the desktop page? everything else seems to be working fine.

Could be a driver problem, and since you already have one driver problem....also could be that your drives are in "MS-DOS compatability Mode"...especially if the referrence is to a real-mode CD driver that is still trying to load.

Just post your autoexec and config.sys files....I bet it is trying to load the DOS drivers for the CD and isn't finding one of the files....the DOS drivers are not needed by Windows and are likely to because a major headache...
You can also type the word rem in front of any line reffering to the CD in those two files
would look something like:
rem_LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
(with a space instead of the underscore)

i loaded some more drivers for the sound card and the computer has not froze yet, but now it keeps giving me blue error screens, about 3 consecutively, then my comp works. the screens say something about VXD error.

Copy down the exact error message and post it here...if it works after going through the errors then the missing ones are not too critical and can probably be traced down and removed or reinstalled.

the error message is : An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C00069F8 in VxD VMM(01)+ 000059F8. This was called from 0028:C004BFFC in VxD VFAT(01)+0000A024.

A couple of refferences that I have found for that error seem to be related to sound card driver problems...... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif , specifically SB cards...are you sure that the drivers you are installing are the most recent ones?

i went to Device Mananger, Sound Card, Properties, Update Drivers and had the drivers updated automatically from the internet and it told me that it was already using the best driver for the sound card. is it just saying this or am i missing something? this is starting to get aggrivating. how long did it take you to learn computers and how to fix them? this seems like a easy problem to fix and i can get it.

i went to a drivers web site and loaded 2 more drivers for my sndcrd but i still get blue screens(same ones) and it usually takes two or more tries to get connected to the internet. i'f i could narrow down the possibilities of whats wrong, i could probably figure it out. i don't know what is causing these problems(blue screens, freezes before modem dial up). can anyone help me try to pinpoint these problems so i can use my computer? i'm hoping someone has either had these same problems or is just a pro at troubleshooting. believe me, at this point, i appreciate any input i can get.

No, truthfully, I don't. Found this page on Fatal Exception Errors (http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/fatlexer.htm#FATLEXEROE), and I remember a time when I turned off all Windows sounds except for "NO, can't do that" sound and know that "hangs" can be caused by entrance and exit music. The above is a page off the main List of help sites (http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/fatlexer.htm).
My husband often has considerable difficulty loading newer drivers. 98 is stubborn about insisting that it is already using the best driver. I will ask him, but as far as I know, he just keeps trying various ways to get 98 to accept the drivers.
I know this isn't exactly your problem, but you might glance through this Shutdown and startup troubleshooter (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm)...might get some clues from there.

I think a good start would be to post your autoexec and config.sys files, as MJC suggested, otherwise, there is not much to work with.

first i want to thank mjc, reid, erniek and kayofcircles for their continued support. i really want to fix this before i take it to a shop. i reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything. i'm still getting blue screens and occassional freezes. how do i get the autoexec and config files for you to examine, mjc? i am learning something new every day(for free). as soon as i find out how to get these files to you i will execute immediately. thanks again.

Ok the easiest way to get them is to open them up in notepad, from with in Windows, but since you are having problems keeping a Windows session long enough to do anything....you can copy them to a floppy disk and open them in notepad on a working machine. Boot to DOS (hit<f8> at startup and select the option for command line) at the c:\ prompt, put a blank formatted floppy into the a: drive first, type copy_c:\autoexec.bat_a:\ (repeat for config.sys, and use a space instead of an underscore). Then on a working machine start notepad and the Open, then just put in the floppy and point notepad to it....then highlight the text (or use select all in the edit menu) and then copy...and paste it in a post here (you can do this while online and signed in here; the copy and paste is much easier if it is the last thing you need to do before making the post)
Also, if you just reformatted and reinstalled it seems that those files are less likely to be the problem, and more likely that you are dealing with a RAM problem...if you have more than one stick of RAM, pull one and try running, if error free, repeat for the remaining stick(s) until you find the problem stick...(if this is RamBus memory this techniuqe won't work, because it needs to be installed in pairs, you would need another pair to test), if all the sticks work by themselves then test in combination (if you only have 2 then one of them is not compatible with the other).
