Make sure that scandisk is on the bootdisk you are using, boot to it and run scandisk from the disk (you can also run scandisk from the Win98 CD)...it sounds like your hard drive may be on its way to the "Great Beyond".

Does the bios recognize the drive?
Get the diagnostic software from the web site of the hard drive manufacturer. It may still be under warranty and you could get a replacement.
Put a second drive in as the master, make the old drive a slave and copy all of the data you can on to the new drive.
Now, let me get on my soap box for a minute. All of you folks out there in PC Guide land:
PLEASE BACKUP UP YOUR DATA FILES. USE TAPE, ZIP, CDR, FLOPPY (If you must),
BUT BACKUP. A HARD DISK HAS MOVING PARTS AND WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. I READ SOMETHING A LONG TIME AGO THAT GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
"There are only two kinds of computer users; those that have experienced hard disk failure and those that are going to."
Data backup should an essential component of any computer setup anywhere!!!!
