I am having a problem shutting down. This problem just came up for the past 2 shutdowns. When i shutdown my computer, it shuts down alright, as in, the monitor goes off and the HD goes off too but the power of the cpu will still be on and the cpu fan is still running. Anyone has got a answer to this problem. And, I'm running a Athlon 1250 on a socket A motherboard, thinking of getting a quieter fan. Can i get something for other sockets or must i stick to a fan that is only suited for Socket A motherboard. My friend told me that i can use standard socket 478 fans too. Is that ture? Would someone please enlighten. Thanks a million!

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
Which operating system are you using?? Have you added any new software recently??

As far as the fans, you should be able to substitute just about any 12v 3wire (most need RPM sensing) of the same size. A heatsink that fits a particular processor will more determine the fan size than what socket type the processor is...

I followed the guide on the windows page and its ok now. Thanks. Anyway, regarding the cpu fan, i'm actually looking for a ready built type, meaning, one that can be bought from a shop and just fix on. Don't want to have to get a fan and a heatsink seperately. Most of the time, they are grouped by their socket types. If i'm using Socket A motherboard, does it mean, if i go to a shop, i can get other socket's cooler as well? Hope that's clearer now.

Here's some solutions:
http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/main.htm
Many of the stock fan/sink assemblies only come with 60mm fans. The problem with 60mm fans is that to produce the volume of air necessary to cool effeciently, is that they need to be turning at a higher speed...this, unfortunately is what creates the noise.
Many of the regular folks here are using heatsinks that will accommodate at least an 80mm fan. This allows the fan to be turning at lower RPMs and reduces the noise.
You might want to have a look at thermalrights which make just the sink and you can add a fan.
Or, if you do purchase a stock setup with a 60mm fan there are adapters you can purchase that will allow you to install an 80mm fan...

I believe i am using Theraltake's Silent Volcano 9 which is in no way silent. 48 dbi!! http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1365.htm
The noise is quite unbearable, that's the reason why i'm changing. Its a stock 80mm fan too right? But its running high rpm all the time, that's why its so noisy. My cpu is running at a mean of 42 degrees. Will it be ok if i change to another quieter fan? What i liked about this fan though is its running at 75.70 CFM @ 4800 rpm. Quite a bit of air flow. I wonder if i change to another fan, will the cooling be compromised. Which model will be good? I'm a total newbie at this. Please help.

The Volcano 9 has a variable speed fan. You can hook it up so that it adjusts fan speed according to the temp sensor that gets mounted under the processor...or, you can hook up the potentiometer that is furnished and adjust manually...
I have one on mine and use the manual pot control...it works quite well and is definitely quieter than running at full throttle...

I tried removing my cpu cooler yesterday. But i could only remove the side with the clip. This model has only one clip on one side but no matter how i move it, it just seems stuck to the base. How do i remove it? And i do not have a temp sensor on my cpu. Does that come seperatly? The 48 dBi is just too much to take especially at night when its really quiet. I tried changing the cooler fan to a slower fan from coolermaster, but within seconds, the temperature started shooting up. So i just switched back to the stock fan of the volcano 9. Help... ha... thanks!
