View Full Version : DIMM/SIMM recognition on AI5TV motherboard

Does anyone out there still use an AI5TV motherboard? I've experienced some odd memory limits when trying to add SIMMs to extend memory past 64Mb.
Even with 2x32s and 2x16s the CPU/BIOS still reports 64Mb no matter what order I use to fill up the 2 banks. The manual states the motherboard can support up to 128MB of SIMMS (either EDO or FPM type in any combination) and 64 MB of DIMMs, using a single slot for the latter.
Anyone have experience in any of this? If it matters, the Motherboard is a MyComp 430VX type board, identified as being Revision 1.3C (circa first half of 1997).

Two things to try.....
1. Verify the memory you are putting in the computer is good memory + it must be correctly seated to work...as I'm sure you know.
2. pull the Dimms out [if you are using it] and verify the Simms you have in there is showing up in bios.

I've got a board with SIMMs and DIMMs. ASUS TXP4.
I believe the manual states not to use a mixture of SIMMs and DIMMs (voltage problems).
I don't think you can mix EDO and FPM, it has to be either/or.
Is all the memory as you require, regarding parity/non parity?
EDO and FPM DIMMs are available, but not common. Are you sure your DIMM is either EDO or FPM?
I'm not sure whether speed differences would cause memory not to be recognised, but I don't suppose it would help things generally.

I'm not using the DIMM at all. The manual states it is limited to 64MB for some reason.
All I'm using are the four SIMM slots. Up to now, the motherboard has accepted any combination of SIMMS, provided each pair is the same type (EDO or FPM). For example, I most recently had 4 16MB SIMMS (two were EDO, the other two FPM) and the system correctly detected them, for a total of 64 MB. It's only recently that I've attempted to break out past 64MB by substituting a pair of 32MB SIMMS (FPM I believe) in place of 2x16s.
I'm beginning to think the 64MB DIMM limit is somehow applied across the board (excuse the pun!).

Hi Jonny5,
You may be right with the general limit of your board. On my board the limits for the DIMM and SIMMs is the same (256).
I din't know it was possible to mix pairs of EDO and FPM.
Have you tried with just the 2x32 modules?

I've just stumbled across something else that may be relevant to the uppper memory limit.
start/run/msconfig/advanced. Have a look and see whether the 'limit memory to___MB' box is checked.
