View Full Version : major problem, please help
Please help.
My computer is giving me loads of problems.
I do not know what to do.
I am running Windows XP
My main concern is word files that I cannot view.
When I click on a word file.
It opens and it is illegible because it has
Of type:
run in DOS mode.
$ % ×āKO×āKO×āKO
Then it has a lot of break points.
I am running MS office 2000.
These are many years of work.
What can I do?
On some files it says this format is not supported and asks for MS office disk.
When computer has finished loading what it needs it gives me an option of conversion. For example Chinese some other language, it has option for plain text this also gives the same gobble de gook.
Please, please, please help.
Also if I leave my computer unattended for over 10 minutes it reboots and says computer has had a fatal error.
How can I resolve this?
My concern is resolving the word files as I have files that need to be handed in for a
Assignment. URGENT.
Are the files on your hard drive or floppies?
Also, did the computer ever work correctly? If so try restoring to the last known working configuration in windows.
Erik
The computer started giving problems today.
I recall deleting some files.
How do I configure to last working configuration?
Go to Control Panel, pick Performance and Maintanence.
In the upper left one of the options will be System Restore. Click this, and follow the instructions. You want to select restore my computer to an earlier time. Just pick a restore point before the problems started. Hopefully this will take care of your problem.

to boot winXP to last known good configuration>
at boot press F8 this will give you boot options.
highlight "last known...." (by using the up and down arrows) and then press the enter key, allow windows to boot.
that's it.

As you can see I have multiple errors happening al at once.
I think they many euphmism for it like sods law murphy's law.
Screen goes blue with text filling the whole screen at the bottom it says technical information
* stop: 0x000fx (ox0003, Ox8ofcad18, Ox80cafic, Ox805f**)
begining dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory in disk
Note I have noticed that when I go to log off the "stand by" is DISABALED.
could this be the problem.
That computer keeps on rebooting after 10 minutes.

I have done what sea69 and Erik has suggested.
XP is only letting me go back to Wednesday 6th March 02.
My problem started around Wednesday 9am.
Before going to the internet I have been logged onto this session for over 30 minutes and so far it has not restarted.
All my word files for the last four years + are still corrupted.
None of them have any virsus (All those I have checked any way, just over 10).
So I can assume there are no virsus.
What can I do know?
My main concern is one particular file which needs to be handed in for an assignment on Tuesday.
Perhaps there are tools I can use to restore word files?
I have not been able to test all my software but
My off-peak serving icon is still not working.
Shall I take the option of reformatting my hard disk.
Now that my computer has not restarted for just over 30 minutes, If my CD-writer is working I can burn any needed files on there.
If not I know that my Zip 250 is working.
Problem here is that they only hold 250 mb and the zips are quite expensive.
Please reply soon?

See if you can open the files in Notepad or Wordpad.
The "rebooting" problem may just be power management. Try turning it off.
Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
>See if you can open the files in Notepad or Wordpad
Have already tried this.
Would like other suggestions?
How can XP do this do all my Word files?
I have tried opening at many computers but with no luck.
>The "rebooting" problem may just be power management. Try turning it off.
For nearly 2 hours no reboot problem.
So no more reboot problem
Try to use that restore point. I would also suggest that you try to see if there are any other restore points available. By default Windows will only show the most recent, you must cycle through the list to find older ones. Try to fond a one before the problems began, if not available try the oldest one you can find.

Still need to recover over 4 years of word files which have been corrupted.
I have downloaded the program as Ghost_hacker has suggested.
from http://www.rocketdownload.com/Details/File/5483.htm
I had tested the program on a corrupted file that wasn't to important.
For this file it worked reasonably well that is it had most text but not the formating.
When I tried on important files it gave me this message:
" run in DOS More Programs PaneDesktop User between clean upMicrosoftCurrentVersionCleanupWizLast used Balloon DesktopCleanShutdownControl PanelAppearanceRecentFourCharsetsControl Cleanup "
The message is very obscure to me.
I have sent email to wordrecovery also.
can any one help?

Roxio sells a product that, among other things, is said to undo file loss, operator error, etc. Why not take a look at "Go Back 3"....... http://roxio.com/en/products/goback/index.jhtml

"Go back" would not apply in this if he got it now, it would have needed to of been installed prior to a bad event happening.

DEK, do you remember what files you deleted? Were they system files?
Have you tried an earlier restore point? You may have to reinstall Word to get these files back.
Do I understand you in that, you were able to save these Word files to a disk and view them on another machine and they were still corrupted?
Have you tried to view them in DOS?
What was the outcome of the attempt with Notepad?

>Go Back 3 will not work for my problem.
>do you remember what files you deleted?
No, deleted many rubbish files, deleted file that I do not use,
files which I do not have as hard copy.
So short answer is no.
>Have you tried an earlier restore point?
I have cycled to the earliest restore point.
>You may have to reinstall Word to get these files back.
I have installed MS Word 2000 about 5 or 6 times since the problem started.
(Office XP comes with restore... what a shame I don't have a copy yet?)
Any new word files I can save and then work with.
>Do I understand you in that, you were able to save these Word files to a >disk and view them on another machine and they were still corrupted?
Yes.
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
What was the outcome of the attempt with Notepad?
I have tried the files in wordpad and notedpad the outcome is gobble de gook.
>Have you tried to view them in DOS?
How can I do this???
Have you actually tried using the earliest restore point, or did you just cycle to it?
Erik
>Have you actually tried using the earliest restore point, or did you just cycle to it?
Yes I have tried the earliest restore point that was available.
I have since been back to start/control panel/performance maintenance/system restore/
I have created my own restore point after problem started to occur.
That is when my computer became a little stable; scared that something worse might happen.
These restore points and the previos ones are no longer there.
I have one restore point there today which is timed in AM when I started the computer.
Can any one tell me how to view these files in DOS.
One some files the only legiable line between the gobble de gook is
"run in DOS mode"

are you doing or have you done anything with LINUX on this machine?
are you or have you run or downloaded any games that may have been looking for DOS mode?

NO
Is it possible to run the word/notepad corrupt files in DOS mode?
If so how?

Dek,
I don't know how you would run MS Word or notpad in "Dos mode", as they are native window applications, but maybe someone else has some suggestions about that. I wanted to suggest:
1) There is a more recent demo of WordRecovery than the one at rocketdownload.com. It is located at :
http://www.officerecovery.com/word/index.htm
maybe you will have more luck with this version.
2) You mentioned that you scanned several of the word files for a virus, so you were sure that there was none. I would suggest that you scan your entire system immidiately, as a virus located anywhere on your system could mangle your documents without actually infecting them.
3) You should also consider checking your filesystem for errors. If you have some sort of utilities program installed (eg Norton Utilities) you can use their utility. If not, just open a command prompt (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and type chkdsk [x:], where [x:] is your drive letter. (For example, if I wanted to check drives C and D on my computer, I would use chkdsk c: and chkdsk d: ).
Good Luck,
John
