View Full Version : Only recognising 32MB of 256MB RAM

I was recently given a working 256MB DIMM of PC100 SDRAM, which I installed. On startup, only 32MB of the 256MB is recognised. I have tried different memory configurations including just the 256MB stick by itself, to no avail.

My system: ABIT BP6, dual celeron 433's. According to the manual, the BP6 will take up to 3 256MB DIMMs of RAM - both single and double density DIMMS.

Grateful for any help with this problem!!

Hi Marcus,

I just had the same thing happen when I went to increase the amount of RAM I had. I bought a 256meg chip of generic pc100. I couldn't get it to work in any configuration even though it worked in two other computers. It always came up 32megs on my system. Replaced it with a stick of Kingston RAM and all was well. Some motherboards just don't seem to get along with some RAM.

If you can beg or borrow another stick of RAM, you can try it and see if it's a problem with your system or just a bad stick of RAM. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Also, going with the "some motherboards don't like some RAM" idea, it entirely possible that this stick will perform perfectly on a differnt board.

Is it ECC by any chance? Does your board support ECC?

I recently had a stick that wouldn't work in my machine if it was combined with any other memory, by it self it was fine, but it works without any problems in my sister's machine....

Ram is the one of the most fussy pieces of hardware you can put in your pc....most probably motherboard/ram incompatibility, ram is highly susceptible to various conditions. always buy good quality ram...you will never have these problems...good luck

Thanks for the help and advice.

My motherboard does indeed support ECC.

I will try the RAM on another computer and see whether it works.
