i recently had to install windows back over itself as i had to replace mainboards. (windows doesnt like having its core hardware changed underneath it)

anyway my scsi adapter works. comes up. all the bells and whistles.

my scanner, comes up as #2 and appears to think about working and stops. 7-8 minutes later (long time) it comes back with a very descriptive error message "the scanner encountered an error".

any suggestions or ideas? oh, and it isnt locked. checked that.

If you added any PCI hardware [cards] to this board, did you "Force Update the ESCD" to have resources allocated at startup to those items?
In my BIOS Setup it's done at "PnP/PCI Configuration" by setting "Reset Configuration DATA : Enabled", then "Save & Exit Setup".
The PCI hardware is then re-detected & non-conflicting resource allocations made and recorded in the ESCD and locked by "Reset Configuration Data" being auto-reset to "Disabled". These new settings are used at each startup untill any new "Force Update".

If the above does not help, try uninstalling the scanner through Device Manager, rebooting and letting it be detected with your install files handy.

But if this is during bootup, just disconnect your peripherals (when powered down, then reboot) and see if a different error message shows.
