I have a spare computer which is running Windows Millenium as it has so much junk on it I have decided it would be best to format the hard drive and start afresh.

Can somebody please advise the best way to do this, I do not have any of the driver discs. I am really looking to remove windows millenium and replace it with windows xp (registered legal version)

Please can you advise the best way to go about this, this will be a learning curve for me as its a spare computer and I am always keen to learn.

The computer specs are: Windows Millenium
1000 mhz
Pentium Processor
256mb Ram
5.1 sound
128 Graphics

Go here, http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/installxppro1.htm if you're using XP Pro, or here, http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPHome/installxphome1.htm for XP Home.

Good luck.

Before you start this, you want to be certain your PC meets the minimum specs or better for XP.
Installation itself is easy, you put the disk into the CD-ROM drive and it formats from the disk.

Use this Driver Guide Toolkit Free Trial (http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/) to backup your drivers to a suitable media.
Once WinXP is installed [using whatever drivers are available on the XP CD], if any drivers need updated, you'll need to go into safe mode and update by pointing the wizard at the ".inf" file for the driver saved on the media.

Before you do any of that, use the "Windows XP Upgrade Advisor" (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx) to checkout your hardware & software for compatibility.
See also the "Windows XP Professional Upgrade Center" (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/default.mspx).
