My friend has 6 USB ports, two on board and four that he connects externally. He tied to connect his portable mp3 player and heard a scrachty high pitch sound. His USB ports have not worked since. Any suggestions? Please!!!

By the four external ones, do you mean he's using a Hub?
if so, he could have caused a power surge when he plugged in the player, and it fried his onboard ports. Open device manager and check the status of the USB ports; see if they show active and have power allocated to them.
If he did fry them, then the only way i know of to repair them is to purchase a new motherboard, especially if this is a name brand model PC-since companies like Compaq and HP use propietary hardware.
