My pc has just recently started humming constantly. I was playing a game when it just started to make a lot more noise then normal. I was a bit silly and tapped the top of the case, and in doing so stopped the noise. Soon after however it started again.

I don't think it's anything to do with the pc being warm or anything. Someone told me it might be to do with the power supply though, or just to take off the case, have a look, and put the case back on. Any idea if this might help at all?

If you just taped it and it quieted down then i would imagine that it could be the fan in the power supply or the case it's self may just be a little loose,or a beisel vibrating ? just hold different parts of the case to see if it stops.sometimes i can hold or put my finger on the plastic part of the case the noise will go away or get louder? If it's not any of the hardware then you could always put sound proofing in the case, but remember this will raise the temp. inside the case so adjust with adding another fan.

Hello Bowser and welcome,
I would also open the case and look for the fans. Look for builtup dust. This causes fans to become unbalanced and overburdoned, which causes more noise and eventualy failure http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
That of course would lead to other problems.

Most times this dust can easily be removed with a little compressed air or a damp Q-Tip.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

<Blushes> I haven't taken the case off my pc before, but I remember reading about earthing yourself by touching it before you touch any pc innards, is this right? And will that get rid of any static for sure? I don't want to kill my pc.

This can be a few things:-

Take case of listen for where the noise is.
If it's the....
Graphics card fan....bearing maybe going:- take card out and place a very small drop of lubricant oil (WD40) or nearest inside the fan gap into the bearing. This will sort it out

It could be cables over the cpu fan this causes this type of noise to..(Tie back cables)

It could also be the fan on the cpu going, check to make sure it's still spinning, then take fan out and put some oil in the tight enclosed case below the actuall fan...the wipe excess and blow the fan round for a few minutes

hope this helps
