I am getting a strange error that I have never seen anyone discuss before. Here are some specs and background:
Compaq 5020
PII
98SE
192Mgb PC66

Installed new 128Mgb RAM and new floppy. Removed several unneeded programs (including Norton Systeworks 2001) and cleaned up the startup.
System starts great, running at 95% free resources.
When I open the control panel, I get this notice: "An error occured while Windows was working with the Control Panel file "C:\Windows\System\Setnote.cpl". That is all it tells me, I then hit OK and it goes to control panel just fine.

This was happening before I removed Norton but I'm not sure when exactly it started. The file is there so it's not missing, just an error while working with it.

Heres the weird part: I started in DOS, did the "scanreg /restore" thing, picked the date of the 5th, it rattled and buzzed for a few seconds, then said "Restore operation failed" ??? tried again with a newer date (6th) and same thing.
Went for "scanreg /fix" and it took a bit, but said successful http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Tried control panel again, same thing.

My first thought is to replace the file but I thought I would check in here first.

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Thanks
Frank

Check out this Microsoft KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q190367

Also the reg. restore could fail because of the program's attempt to save the current registry before restoring the old. If the save operation should fail the restore process will be aborted.

Check out the following links for more clues:

Thanks Ghost,
I haven't tried it yet, but sounds like just the ticket http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Interesting stuff though. Adds some new dimension to the usage of scanreg /restore. We have talked and recommended it quite a bit here lately. One of the points discussed was how many backups you have available. Now I know how to adjust that.

Thanks again http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Ghost, Thanks so much for the link. Renameing the "setnote" file did the trick.

As for the regedit problem, both of the links you gave addressed this machine (least recent entry and Norton Unerase).
I didn't bother with that to much but, I did go thru the registry and slash-cut everything Norton and Symantec. All is well now http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

bassman- you ever notice when I tell how to do scanreg /restore to someone- I always say to "go back to the day before ONLY?

(day before the problem started)
