Well not sure can i ask this here but here is the problem. I have 2 PCs at home. One is using win98SE which is connected to the internet, another Win Xp is linked to this PC via a hub. I have tried using the default network setup programs but to no avail.

I have tried setting both PC (win98SE to ip=192.168.0.1 sub= 255.255.255.0) (WinXP ip 192.168.0.2, default gateway = 192.168.0.1 subnet = 255.255.255.0) But I still cant seem to get both to work together or share internet connection.

Hope someone can enlighten me a bit here thks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Do this on the computer where the modem is installed leave the ethernet IP to 192.168.0.1
Then on the client machine go to the Network Properties. ANd go to the ethernet TCP>ethernet adapeter.
Put the IP as automically detects settings. HOpe this helps.
Then restart and click on internet explorer.

first thing you want to do is to make the winXP machine the server or host. ( the machine with the connection)

then just click on start>> control panel>> network and internet connections>> set or change your home or small office network, and follow the wizard- you can trust this wizard- unlike previous M$ magical blunderland non- wizards that just didn't do anything.

you will also need to run the winXP wizard (which you will be prompted to place onto a floppy) in the win98 machine.-(very important)

it does all the settings for you- a "no brainer" if there ever was one.

give it a try.

Thank you for ur advices but in this case my Win98SE PC is the host and the XP is the "slave". Is it not possible to link with SE as the host.

never did it that way.

not saying it can't be done but would you mind explaining why you would want a wincrash98se as a host over winXP?

kinda putting the cart before the horse it seems....

Howdy nexis9

I am no expert at this by any means but...I have 98SE and XP networked without using the XP wizard although as sea69 says it make it fairly simple.

I am using a router ( alittle different than a hub I gather) but..In network properties both have Client for MS Network set as well as file and printer sharing turned on....The IP addresses are set to auto and are 98SE=192.168.1.101...XP=192.168.1.100

Here's a link that can help more than I can for sure

good luck

just a note-

I am networked in the sense that I am sharing internet connection only with a win98se machine- no file or printer sharings going on.

buck52- looks like you did manually what XP wizrd will do, your HOST however is winXP right?

sea

I think the 98 machine is the host but at the risk of showing my ignorance I'm not sure...When I set this mess up I just put it all together, read a few threads here, fiddled with a few of the setting and it worked. Either machine works without the other having to be on... except obviously the file sharing http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

edit... kind of scratching my head here...Is there realy a host/client using a router

Howdy

I must apologize ( sleepy last night )

I actually added XP as a dual boot to an existing 98 to 98 network so
I didn't run the wizard because the network was working fine. ( It's been so long since I boot to 98 on that machine I forgot it was there ) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
I think the procedure will still work if the wizard is not used

yes I guess that is correct although I'm still alittle unclear what make
it the server/host...either machine has full access to the net weather the other is off or not...when they are both on, they share files back and forth equally...actually the machine that has 98 only is the only one with a printer ,which makes it a print server of sorts ( correct?) If it is off the dual boot (XP-98) machine can not print....aside from the print issue what make one a server and the other not

thanks for any additional info

duh- you're using a router not a hub- so it makes no difference.

somehow I didn't get that.

Well in this situation because it is considered my main PC with a whole host of hardware and software. Hardware which XP does not accept thus my "mother PC is the one running on SE http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
