Perhaps someone has had this problem with ABIT KT7-RAID, and can help me determine if any of the componets were left uncooked.I built the system early 2001, 1GHZ T-Bird,30Gig IBM Deskstar,Win ME and everything running smooth. I went into CMOS to check CPU temp. and decided to change default settings to "load optimized defaults". ZAP! no keyboard,no mouse,no screen just instant junk. I reboot and nothing but a sick looking safe mode with fuzzy icons. BIG QUESTION------can I save the hard disk drive?,it kind of had my taxes on it.

Im wondering whether clearing the CMOS, would help this situation.
This re-sets bios defaults.

The Hard drive should be fine, you might be able to put it into another system, to retrieve any needed files on to a Floppy./Cd-rom

Worth a try if you haven't already!

Hey thanks for the encouragement on the HD. Last week I got a ABIT KR7A-133R and a new 1gig 266FSB T-Bird do you think that 30 Gig would fire up the new sys.? Yes Sir! I did remove the battery and discharge the CMOS

So is it fixed?

If not, removing the battery won't necessarily clear the CMOS, you need to find the reset jumper...and make sure the PSU is unplugged or the switch on the back of it is OFF or it will still supply power to the board...

If you can get back into BIOS setup, load the failsafe settings, that should fix it...

It should work, but I would strongly recommend formatting it and reinstalling Windows. Leftover drivers and motherboard resources can and do cause more headaches than it's worth...try setting it up as slave and transferring files you need to save in DOS, if possible, to a different drive. Then reinstall and replace the files.

As a general rule if you're having problems they will be dragged along if you try swapping components, especially hard drives, to a different machine. Either fix it before the swap or format and start over.

Thanks Hiredgoonz, I did move jumper from pins 2-1 (default) to pins 3-2 (discharge) still no keyboard or mouse.I'm kind of looking at the USB controller now since it can be set in BIOS or OS. I'm beginning to think the OS is damaged in some way. If I set up the KR7A-133R and mirror this damaged 30 gig Deskstar with a 6.4 gig HD with Win ME maybe I can get my tax imfo back? THanks for the Driver link.

Paleo Pete, Thanks sound advice, but do you think if the damaged 30 gig HD 100/ata was mirrored with an operating 6.4 66/ata (same OS) I could get the files back? The KR7A is backwards compatible 133-66. By the time I learn how to move files etc., April 15 will be gone. The operating system is not a strong point with me.
