Hi All,

I am in the process of assembling my PC. I have run into a problem right at the first step. My motherboard is Intel 845BGL (with built-in LAN), Intel P4 1.6A processor, 512 MB DDR RAM 184 pin DIMM, Radeon 7000 64MB SDR AGP video card. Now when I switch on the system with just this configuration (no floppy, no hard drive and no CD ROM drives connected), the display that I get on the screen is the copyright information from Intel about the Motherboard, the processor description at the top of the screen and at the bottom it says 'Entering SETUP...' on one line and 'Press F12 to boot from network' on another line. This screen just stays there for about a minute or so and then the system powers off. The fans (rear chasis fan and processor fan) work, no beep codes, it just sits there. What can I do next? The keyboard doesn't seem to work (i.e. pressing F2 or F12 doesn't make any difference). The problem is not with the keyboard as I tested this on another PC and it works fine. The power supply too seems to be working (the fact that the motherboard information is displayed on the screen leads me to believe that).

Anybody please help !!!

Thanks,

Aravind Ram

I would be inclined to look at the Power supply, with this basic configuration, it shouldn't be to hard to find the problem. Hangs and reboots at this stage would probably lead to a good look and test of the PS. What make and model is it? whats the power output. On the off chance do a "out of case test", see if this makes any difference, if it does then could be a possible "short" .."incase". but i doubt it.

Worth re-seating everything and trying if you haven't already..
could also be a Heat problem with the processor..

The more advanced here may be able to shed more light. im just throwing suggestions

good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

You M/B bios and Nic are configured to follow the boot order set in the Bios.
Included in that boot order is the network / other option.
The message about hitting the F12 key is telling you that the system was unable to boot from the connected or default devices and is attempting to boot from the network server.

You can disable the network boot by changing the boot order or disabling the network boot option in the bios.

Also Hook a floppy drive up and put a boot disk in it.

You should check the manuals for your mother board for the correct key to press to enter the Bios setup

Many thanks for your suggestion. I am indeed going to try "out of case" test tonight. The power supply came with the case (Evercase model ECE4252 www.evercase.com (http://www.evercase.com) ). It is supposed to be P4 ready.

The problem is that it does not even enter the BIOS setup. Initially I had the floppy, the hard drive and the CD ROM drive connected but since that did not work, I took out the floppy, HD and CD to make it at the least go into BIOS. The system just displays 'Entering Setup...' and shuts down after about a minute.

It was bad RAM. Now trying to get back the money I paid for it on eBay. Wish me luck. Should never have strayed from newegg.com. Sigh!
