does powering up and powering down a computer multipile time in a day cause undue harm to the computers components?

Yes, it does, expansion/contraction, undue wear on the HD, etc...
If you are going to be away from the machine for something more than an hour or 2, then it is probably ok.
But I don't think it really matters, I have an old system that regularly was on/off and it is still ticking...it looks like you may shorten the life of some components by doing the on/off thing but by the time they fail due to "old age" you will have upgraded at least once......
