Hello everyone,
I seriously need some help here.

I wanted to add 512MB RAM to my sys at home, and so I went out and bought 512MB 333MHz of DDRRAM. This is the exact same type, apparently, to the ram at home already. (Except made by a diff company, qp1, or idb...not sure which side was up...lol)

I went home, I stuck it in the slot for additional RAM, and switched it on.
When I switched it on, all I got was 3 beeps and then a couple of seconds silence and then 3 beeps, and repeat.

COuld anyone tell me what happened, what I did wrong, and what I should do to try and recover my sys?

THanks...
I am a total nub at this.

Note: The guy in the store told me that all I had to do was plug it in and the comp would detect it and sort it for me...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the PC Guide forums!

Remove the stick you just added and see if it boots up.

I'm a newbie at this, but does your mobo support the new amount of ram?

hockey man,
When I gave the advice it was shorthand for "what did you do right before the problem", reversing what was done should restore the function.
The "why it did not work" question is anything from wrong RAM/incompatable RAM/BIOS limitation if function is returned with the original set up.

I read somewhere that it I am meant to update the bIOS settings before adding the RAM...could that be something I should do assuming the comp will boot up?

THanks for the advice prnt, and the welcome.

Windows should recognize the amount of new RAM automatically. The only time you would have to change something in BIOS would be to change speeds, and you do not want to do anything like that when adding to existing RAM.
If removing the new RAM allows the PC to boot, it should be taken back for a refund ASAP.
The comment about BIOS limitation was to explain limits some OEMs place in their BIOS versions on the amount of RAM recognized. Your symptoms are different, most times if the RAM is not recognized it simply does not show up on bootup.
If you posted specifications of your PC we would be able to determine maximum RAM by Brand/Model or main board name/model.

If I could do that off the top of my head then I wouldn't be a nub. If I could get my sys goin again then I will.

Thanks for your help.

I am currently posting from my computer which now has 1024MB of DDRRAM....so I would like to give thanks to prnt for his suggestions on what to do, and I will definitely use this forum in the future...I plan on upgrading my sys for gaming over the next months.

Thanks a lot prnt, it is much appreciated.
