I am running Windows 2000 on a new computer. I have two devices which run on Com Port 1 and Com Port 2. The first is a Seiko Label Printer and the second is digital transcription pedals. I have Win 2000 software loaded for each device. I have label printer in Com Port 1 and pedals in Com Port 2. When I go into Seiko software to assign Com Port it is tell me that Com Port is being used and will not work.
Com Port 2 - pedals work fine. I switch label printer to Com Port 2 and pedals to Com Port 1 and I can't get the pedals to work. Label printer works fine in Com Port 2.
How can I check to see what is being used by Com Port 1?
Thanks!
Linda

Do you have an internal modem?
COM1 and COM3 share the same IRQ and COM2 and COM4 share an IRQ.
I would bet some device is using the same IRQ as COM1 and this is causing a conflict only when you attempt to use the port.
Please check in your device manager and look for IRQ conflicts....

No internal modem (cable modem) No IRQ conflicts either. This has all been checked out. Any other thoughts

Are both com ports activated in the BIOS?

Yes they are. It's a real mystery.

I don't have a machine with Windows 2000 or XP in front of me. Is there a place in the control panel where you can view devices by connection similar to Win 9X?
I would be curious as to what the IRQ's are?
Please advise.
Also, check the FAQ's at the products web-site. Maybe you have to set up the software BRFORE you attach the device....

classicsoftware, Device manager is the same as in Win ME but in XP you just get to it a different way. check in device manager for IRQ conflicts COM ports are not plug and play and need an IRQ all to them selves.

I think Windows XP and Microsoft use more of my bandwidth than I do!

I had someone over at my house, computer tech person, he checked the IRQ's and said there were no conficts. I have been on both sites for these devices and there is nothing in the FAQ's. Of course when they here that they work in Com Port 2 they say well its a Com Port 1 problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and still the same problem. Now it is getting very frustrating. Thanks for all your suggestions.
Remove COM 1 from Device Manager, restart the computer, let Windows reload the drivers, and try it.
If that does not work, then the port may be defective.

We already tried that and the port was tested with a serial mouse and it worked.
Start in Normal mode, write down all of the hardware items in Device Manager, restart in Safe mode, remove any hardware items which did not appear in Normal mode(DO NOT remove any MS Kernel items in 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers', or any extra items in 'System Devices'), restart in Normal mode, try COM 1.

You still have not told me what the IRQ listing looks likes.
What is in each IRQ 1-15.
I know that each com port as specific IRQ, but as I said com 1 and com3 share one IRQ and com 2 and com4 share an IRQ. Do You have more than 1 com port?
If you are certain there are NO IRQ conflicts, open the case nad make sure the com port ribbon cable is plugged into the motherboard.
If that fails, disable com1 in the bios and buy a new COM port PCI card for abour $20.00, assign it to com 1 and forget about the one on board.

Do you have a palm hooked up to your computer? I have seen that the Palm software likes to reserve the serial port even if it's a USB Palm pilot. If there's an icon in the system tray for the palm software, right click on it, and uncheck the serial spot. This would also be why the mouse would work, because it would open the COM port before the palm software. Good luck

Sorry that I haven't provided you with the IRQ listing as I have been swamped with work and have put this problem aside a bit. I will work up this list and post. Thanks for all your help.
