I built a machine about 2 months agon to use strictly for music. It is basicly a Biostar M7VKQ mobo (VIAVT8361(KLE133) chipset) w/ an AMD Athalon 900 Mhz cpu and 128 MB of PC133 SDram. The HD is an IBM 40 gig (7200 rpm). I am (was) running Win 98 SE, It worked fine for the 2 months or so and then about a week ago crashed a few times in a row. I turned it off and went to bed. The next night when I turned on the cpu the Cdrom lights flashed but no post beep and no output to the monitor. I brought down the laptop and plugged in the monitor and it worked fine. I thought it was the mobo so I replaced it with an ECS K7S5A (uses the SIS735 chipset) and had to put in an AGP video card (ATI Radeon 32Meg). Put it back together and same problem??? Swapped out RAM with a 256 meg PC133 sdram chip, same problem... could it be the cpu? power is getting to case and cpu fan and cdroms power up, maybe power supply??
help, frustration setting in... peace - dave

Hi

Well this is what I would presume the "older" guys would recommend first http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

1. Remove your motherboard place on a cardboard or on a non electrical conductive surface and run with minimum items. First with just your CPU, then with RAM, followed by with Hard Disk.

2. If all these fails try checking your Power Supply with a multimeter. If you do not have one try to get your hands on another power supply to test out.

3. If all else fails... wait for older guys to give suggestions http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif hehehe

But in my humble opinion, even after changing your motherboard and RAM this problem still exists it may be your power supply.

I have never encountered dead CPU before but if my memory serves me well enough if your CPU has problems, your motherboard will beep. Well wish you good luck dude~!!

Check the power supply. It may have gone bad, or it may not be powerful enough for an Athlon (which really requires at least a 300W power supply, and works better with power supplies that have been specifically designed for AMD-based systems.)

Hmmm... I guess power supply issues were next on my list of 'usual suspects'. I have a few volt meters but I'll have to research where to place the leads to check the power supply. Anybody know or can anyone point me to a reference. Naturally it's an ATX case and PS.. Thanks for the helpfui responses folks...

If the probes are small enough diaameter you can insert them in th back of the main connector, the black wires are ground and the colored wires are the voltage wires:

Pin# Color Function
1 Orange +3.3V DC
2 Orange +3.3V DC
3 Black Ground
4 Red +5V DC
5 Black Ground
6 Red +5V DC
7 Black Ground
8 Gray Power OK
9 Purple +5V standby
10 Yellow +12V DC
(11) Orange(22) +3.3V DC
(11) Brown(22) 3.3V sense
12 Blue -12V DC
13 Black Ground
14 Green PS-ON
15 Black Ground
16 Black Ground
17 Black Ground
18 White -5V DC
19 Red +5V DC
20 Red +5V DC

Swapping out from a VIA chipset to a SiS chipset best bet would be to do a fresh install of Windoz when you get things running.

I have this strange feeling the CPU went to the Big Motherboard In The Sky.

Luck.
