Im trying to install Win 98 on a Compaq 5120 (1 gig and 32 MB ram) but it always hangs at exactly 11 mins from completion. This is where it says ...
"Setup is now setting up your hardware and any P & P devices. If yr comp stops responding for a long time, turn it off and then back on" ... I try that but it doesnt work. I can get into safe mode tho.
Any tips will be much appreciated!

Turn off the computer, disconnect the power cord from the computer, ground yourself, remove all cards except the video card, and run setup again.
If setup completes, then install the remaining cards one at a time.
If it still hangs, then reformat first and run setup again with only the video card.

Also, an additional 64MB of RAM will help.

Thanks for that but its still not working. There were no other cards to remove except a small one which I think is a cache memory. Anyway I removed that and formatted again but it hangs at exactly the same point as before. The disk is ok as I used it to put Win98 on an old 486 and that had only 16 mb ram.

Hi Bob,

I had the same problem a little while ago. THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q194721) got me out of it. Good luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks Steve. I got to that sys config utility. Next step was to disable the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line in the System.ini file but that line was not there. Interesting tho and I may be going the right direction!

Hi Bob,

Do you have a Display.drv= line at all? I guess you might be hanging just before that part of setup is executed.

No display.drv= line. I think you're right about it hanging
just before that part of setup. Let me know if you get any more ideas.
Bye for now.
