A neighbor of mine had a power surge last week and fired his PC. The power supply wouldn't put out any power.
He purchased new power supply, mb, memory, cpu. He re-installed this new board and hooked it up to the exact same outlet in his house as before. Now it powers up but won't recognize his harddrive. Went into the CMOS setup and change the intergrated periphials (SP?). Change the HD to an old
one of mine, and it detected mine. Re-installed his old one and no joy. No detection.
BTW, his hard drive is making a lot, and I mean A LOT, of noise. Sounds like it is scraping against something.
Do you think the HD is fried? (I told him he needs to purchase a good surge protector, too). Am I right to think it's a gonner?
If you require configuration info, let me know and I get it. I know he's got an atx mb with a PIII/550 cpu. He said he was running Win98, but I can't be sure. (He a novice user)
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them. I've read all current post concerning HD's not booting and tried them all, nothing worked; fdisk, format, ect. All failed.
Thanks inadvance http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Almost definetly the hard drive is a goner and yes it would be wise to get a surge protector and make sure it's a grounded outlet.

First, yes he needs a surge protector. Now if your hard drive works, and his is making all that noice, I would say try a new hard drive.

Well...HDDs are not really supposed to be making "A LOT" of noise! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Sounds like it's time to go SHOPPING (http://www.pricewatch.com)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I also think I heard of a company the recycles old HDDs into surge supressors...just to get even! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

You may also want to look into
Voltage Conditioners and or UPS Uninterrupted Power Supply

Depending on how your local power supply is.
If it’s prone to Brown outs . Voltage spikes The Conditioner may help.
If these are not extended time drops. Most will maintain the +- .5 volts to the PSU

The UPS is good for those areas that lose power completely
But is also Good for brownouts and Power spikes.
With the double duty of Conditioning your voltage and Suppling power during the brown outs.

If you go with a Surge protector Don’t waste the $$ of an ElcheapO unit.
It hurts twice as Much when one of these poor units gets cooked and your system as well
