Hi,

I recently bought a new NEC DVD-RW. once delivered i installed it with no problems what so ever. However, now when it comes to doing things invloving the Dvd-rw it will get to a certain point and switch off or cause my computer to crash. I double checked to see if i installed it correctly and if everything was plugged in where it was supposed to, but i found no reason for concern. Do you have any ideas?

Disconnect all other drives except the boot HD and the NEC drive.
If the problem goes away, then the power supply may be inadequate to run all of the drives.

If the problem still happens, then make sure all cables are securely connected, and the IDE cable's colored stripe along the one edge is next to the power lead on the back of the drive, and next to pin 1 at the MB connector.

If those are ok, then try a different known working IDE cable.

If no luck, then see if the drive has the same problem in another system.
If it does, then the drive may be bad.

Try using the DVD drive in this "Start->Run->msconfig->Diagnostic Startup->[reboot]Normal Startup" software environment [it's like safe mode, but WITH optical drive access].
The software you are using to do things with the drive may be clashing with other software also running [overwriting each others' memory space].
Diagnostic mode has only the bare minimum of software running, which may eliminate the software conflict.
