I got my computer working from the previous problem that I was having. As I was playing a very good game of Q3 tourney, my monitor turned off. I was in shock thinking that my Vid. card must've overheated...

As I laid my PC down, I heard something moving as if something broke off. I got to a conclusion that it was a part from the Power Supply. I took off the PSU, opened it up and found that one of the components had broken off. (Cheap PSU http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif). When I decided to hook it back to see if it was working, all my fans turned on, but for some reason, my drives couldn't get enough power to eject the drive itself...

My question is, is it the Power Suppply or some unknown component ?

First off, a moder ATX motherboard recives power ALL the time so any time you open the case you should unplug it or kill it at the powerstrip. Plugging things in when the board is under power can have very disastrous results!

Second, if you are fairly sure that the part came from the power supply then don't try to run it until you get a replacement power supply, the capacitors in a power suplly can hold a considerable charge and if they are expsoed all sorts of not very nice things can happen....

Third if something was rattling around inside the case, check everything over carefully for damage....

Ok, first thing tomorrow morning, I'll take a picture of it...And I'm for sure the rattling came from the Power Supply http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Ok, I disconnected everything and opened up my power supply. This was the part that I found with was broken off of the PSU chip itself.

That chip came from this PSU :

BTW, the whole "plugging it back in to see if it works" is just one of those no_Ob curiosities. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Tec, check the links for the pics, I can't get them to come up...they time out without displaying a pic. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

But the warning I gave were more or less general to prevent further damage...yeah, I know curiousity can have a great influence on what you want to do, but trying to minimize damage should take precedence......

Help Please ?

Is the PSU the problem to why my drives wouldn't open and why there was no video on the monitor ?
